Hi, I have been reading up on VDSL2 here and found its on ly good for a distance of about 700m from the exchange...I am more than that...around 1.5km so have wondered if you are going to use SHDSL instead here to enable a greater reach....??

I am assuming fibre is not going to be installed to the premises here in Tuakau by Chorus ( they have a project here for completion by June 2013 apparently)

You do realise SHDSL doesn't offer greater reach, but merely a symmetrical service? If you were exactly 1.5km you would be able to get a 5Mbps service but if were were closer to 2km you're only going to be able to get 3Mbps.

depends on the number of pairs and a process of gbonding where in tuakau are you?

Thanks Johny...I dont know much about this one...very keen to get fibre installed if they do put it in here. But I dont think Chorus will be...we are in McGown Rise, a new subdivision off Martindale Lane/Jellicoe Rd/Ave???....

Counties Power are interested in laying fibre but it needs the customer base to do so etc... Rgds....Laurie

I have since had another look at the Chorus web site and it appears we will be getting ADSL2+ in our street from next year and the VDSL coverage actually stops at our back fence!!...so no deal there...It doesn't look like Chorus are installing any fibre in the Tuakau area....??

I think the local schools may already have access to fibre with Counties Power....according to the Koordinates mapping/info etc...and which also appears to go up the main street to the local exchange...

Even though the map shows VDSL stops at your fence you may find you can get it, depends on the quality of the lines which should be good for a new subdivsion and cabinet.

SHDSL is more for business use (and costs are indicative of this). It can go up to 10mbps by bonding many copper lines as far as I am aware. Expect around $600+ a month I think.

Thanks for the update...unfortunately the streets go the long way around to the front of our place...hence the ADSL2 I believe...the retirement village behind us goes the other way towards Tuakau and hence much closer distance to the local exchange...

I assume the ADSL2/VDSL s being done from the old Tuakau phone exchange building rather than installing the new cabinets around the local streets....

The Tuakau exchange was upgraded to VDSL2 in 2011 and there is also a cabinet off this as well. Any further expansion would be new RBI cabinets.

Thanks for the info....I am getting a bit confused over what Chorus were doing next....

The cabinet must be near the schools on Buckland Rd as thats where the second "patch" of VDSL is from memory.

I will get back onto the Chorus web site to find out what "RBI" means for us here......

FYI there was some major looking work done on the cell tower opposite the high school on Buckland Rd about a month ago now...

sbiddle..Thanks finished checking and I see what you were pointing out now...and can see that local (ADSL2) VDSL was completed July 2011 and Dec 2011...from what I can see any future RBI work is in the surrounding rural areas....and no fibre showing up through to their Year Three plan but I guess possibly in years 4/5...which they are going to detail on the site at some later time...

It looks like moving to a VDSL local area here is the best shot we have of getting the faster upload speeds....

SHDSL will give you faster upload speeds, but you need to understand it's business grade product that delivers symmetrical speeds. It's not intended to be a domestic internet connection.

The other option is to move to a wireless carrier, there are a number serving Pukekohe.

Thanks, that explained why I hadn't seen SHDSL before. I currently am on the Compass Communications wireless at 5 down/1 up mbps which they have confirmed is the maximum available speeds...We have line of sight to Pukekohe Hill ok for that....Laurie
