Nationwide outage.  Phone messsage says the fault is due to damage to a fibre-optic cable in Glenfield, Auckland.

Been out since late morning.  Nothing on their facebook page or Twitter and they are not replying to e-mails either.

I have never heard of digital island. Do they have a phone number that you can call for support, rather than just an automated message? If they have an internet outage, then online communications maybe down for them?.

Digital Island is pretty big. i thought they just resold other suppliers? Lol at a single fibre taking all of their network down though.

May be tied up with the Orcon outage as I seem to remember they sold some Orcon products as well like SIP trunking..

Chorus dug through a 96 pair Vector fiber bundle.. apparently they found chunks of the Vector fiber wrapped around the drill-head when they pulled their digging rig out of the ground after it went slightly off course.

Fyx is down too. The latest status update (from 3:30) says ETA 6 to 10 hours away. I don't have many MB left on my phone either!

The thing that annoys me the most is where is the redundancy, for these services to be so reliant on single point of failure is shocking but also seems to be the normal, let's be cheap and not have redundant systems. I hope they consider financial remediation of some sort, especially as vector should have public liability got this type of thing.

you must remember people are crying for unmetered /bigger caps, cheap prices, and high bandwidth.

there's not a huge focus on high reliability / availability.

You get what you pay for? People flock towards the cheapest price but then you lose quality and networks cant spend or re-invest in their network because they're offering services at near cost. Pick a provider that offers quality not quantity.

Lasted from approximately 12pm this afternoon to 8pm this evening.

Maxnet were advising a truck had run over a Vector cable somewhere in Northcote.

Does anyone know more about how the outage occurred and what this cable does in the network?

Yeah, but it's not the first time this has happened with a vector cable on the north shore, and hilighted peoples lack of redundancy.

It's not going to be the last time a fibre cable is chopped, Vodafone Has redundancy so the impact to us was quite small, We could quickly route traffic via another path

For large companies the cost of redundancy is less than loss productivity or business due to an outage  #justsaying
