Hi,

I haven't seen anyone post their experiences in Bishopdale yet, so thought I'd get in first :)

A photo gallery will be forthcoming after the install

Here is a bit of background to set up the scene:

I am an IT professional and will be using my own router etc, not the SNAP supplied Fritz box. No particular reason except i have the other equipment already.

I have been a Snap customer for three years, with no issues, and will be staying with them for UFB.

I am currently renting the the house i am in and have the landlords permission to install fibre

The house is stock standard, and should fall easily in the guidelines for a standard install

So... we have a knowledgable customer, stock install, and no change of provider. In theory this install should go perfectly if everyone has their processes right :)

(This is a bit of novel so you may want to skip a head, not much technical stuff here)

Some of the Bishopdale exchange had been cabinetised, offering VDSL, but the majority of it was still ADSL 2+ and i sat on the out side edge (annoyingly only 100m from a VDSL area ) so was getting sync of around 5.5/.7 on average.

April/May/June/July/Aug: Enable contractors begin laying piping through out a large area of Bishopdale and Papanui. The pipes are Red and and approx100-150mm and are laid under the footpath. Piping is then laid from them to approx every second house gate, two pipes, red again, approx 10-20mm. I am assuming the smaller pipes are run through the larger pipe and split off at each juncture. The termination of the pipes seems to be white cabinets, similar size to the VDSL cabinets, probably a max distance of 100m from the furtherest house

Discussing with the Enable contractors, apparently each small pipe will service one house.

So in May, excited ( probably more so than i should be, is there something wrong with me?), I ring SNAP and am told yes UFB is coming, supposedly around Aug/Sept, and to forward my details to a specific email for further info when plans and timetable are released. Plans a duly released later in the year and for a brief period the website tells me i can get UFB. Contact SNAP, as the pipes are still being laid, "Sorry about that,Enable accidently updated the database, check back around August/Sept

Sept /Oct : Contractors are back as the pressure in the pipes is not holding, so they try to find the leaks :) A bit of swearing going on. Problem fixed no sign of any Enable vans for about a month now

Oct : Constantly checking SNAP website to see if UFB available - 27th Oct will forever be etched in to my brain, supplanting my mothers birthday :)

27th Oct: Now the fun begins. Contact SNAP and select 2 to discuss plans. Talk to Sam. Conversation goes something like this

Me: Hi I'd like to talk to you about UFB, do you know much about it?
Sam : Yep. We have done a few installs, where are you?
Me: Bishopdale
Sam: wow that was quick, they have only just released that to us
..... lots of gushing like a schoolgirl from me on how long i've waited etc :)

Sam confirms I'm a current customer, and begins by updating my details, which had changed. Also checked if i owned or rented. Confirmed i had spoken to the landlord.

Sam: Right so you want the 100/50 plan with your current 60gb top up pack?
Me: Nope lets start with the 30/10 ( baby steps lol ) and a 20gb top up
Sam: Ok. Now you realise that this is a minimum 12 month contract, and if you cancel you have to pay the remainder of the term
Me: (as if i'd cancel ) Yes
Sam: If you do leave the flat you may want to do a transfer of ownership to the landlord to avoid paying the termination fee (good idea!)

Sam then goes on to explain what the procedure for the install is

1) a scoping appointment will be made by Enable to come and look at the property, and discuss with me any technical issues, cabling, location of ETP, ONT etc and to plan the install
2) the civil works ie trenching etc will be completed
3) A tech will attended with the ONT, blow the fibre through, install the ONT and complete the setup. Snap will then switch me over to the fibre connection.

A bonus is that by staying with my ISP i should have ADSL right up to the point of switch over.

Sam then records me agreeing that i know the terms and conditions, that they can alter my direct debit, and that i know it is 12 month contract.

Kudos to Sam, a fantastic customer service experience all around, in case RalphfromSnap is lurking ;)

So.... now waiting in the call from Enable .....Stay tuned for Part 2.

Good luck. Take some photos. Also photos of the whole install area from the ETP point to the kerb would be good.

......Part 2. .........

1.30pm Stephanie from Enable rings me to confirm they have received the job from SNAP, and goes over the 3 visits again. She then says that she can book the final tech appointment now.... So i'm expecting maybe the end of November if i'm lucky :)

"So we have a free appointment on the morning of the 7th"

December, i ask with a small catch in my voice

"No, November".

So next wed it is then :-)

Just waiting on the call to setup the scoping appointment and then we can get this show on the road

Stay tuned for Part 3.........

...... Part 3. .....

Downer have been out and scoped the job for Enable, total length of the fibre run will be around 25m. Apparently Halswell is picking up, they are getting quite a few installs out there. Most jobs seem to be going well, they've only had to cut up one driveway when the drill bit got stuck :)

Unfortunately they don't arrange the time for the digging, they just turn up as no access to house required. This means I may not get pics of the digging :(

Stay tuned. .....

Exciting! And a little bit jealous - Fibre isn't coming to Riccarton for AGES yet!
Best of luck for your appointment on the 5th - Hope it goes well for you. :)

Trenching is done.

Talking to the Downer guys, they are pretty busy, usually 2 jobs a day, mixing it up with some TelstraClear cabling and business installs. Halswell is getting most of them, but they have a few in Bishopdale already.

They are expecting a big surge after Xmas, and are starting to train up some other contractors in anticipation. All looking good for UFB in CHCH :)

Techs in tomorrow AM - hopefully fibre is in in time for the US elections results - will see how many news sites i can stream at once :)

Right - Fibres in - all looks good, but DD-WRT on my E4200 is not playing ball.

Am very quickly coming to grips with the ins and outs of DD_WRT VLANing :)

Will post full details when its up and going

Was going to say to you at Got-Lan to see if you can find a guide on dd-wrt for dual-play setups, or even triple play.

There are some here for OpenWRT:

These should be the settings for getting DD-WRT to do VLAN 10 tagging on the WAN interface. This is under Setup, VLANs.

I haven't tested this properly as of yet, but based on testing with the method below I'd be willing to bet it'll work.
Also remember that you need to set up the router to connect with the ISP, be it with PPPoE or DHCP, whichever they are using.

Also if you have a router which cannot do VLAN tagging which you want to use for UFB, and you also have a spare DD-WRT router hanging around, use these settings:

Connect port 3 to the WAN port on the router, and port 4 to the ONT. It'll tag all traffic going out of port 4 as VLAN 10, which will include traffic from port 3/the other router. Note that you may not get full speed with this setup, I've only tested this with EUBA ADSL, and cannot confirm whether a lower powered router will be able to keep up with tagging all the packets going through it at 100mb/s.

Edit: Also, if you want to try TomatoUSB, these are the VLAN tagging settings you need:

Thanks guys,

There is a known issue with the gui setup for wan vlan tagging not working properly. I tried some cli commands and all seemed to be ok, but there was some settings that didn't change.

Anyway gave up (hate saying that. .... Lets say, i put that router to one side to play with later :) ) and got a fritzbox from snap.

Will thrash the connection over the weekend and see how it goes. Will also get the photos of the install up. Was really interesting how they blow the fibre through

On a Bishopdale related note. I'm pretty gutted :/ I was originally in the "coming soon" as enables previous website had the map going up to Crofton Rd with installation done by 31 dec :/ Guess that's changed....Would have really liked to go on snaps $75 50gb with phoneline...

Didn't realise they had updated their maps! Our address is now showing as "Coming Soon" woohoo. Better start plotting and planning (and bribing the better half).

Same with me, we were right in the middle of the zone for UFB completion by 31 December. They had even started laying the fibre cable near us and from the looks of it had started preparing to rollout fibre in our area and then they changed their plans and now we aren't even in the 'Coming Soon' zone. Cry
