I'm looking for an ISP that would provide the cheapest ADSL plan per month (including the phone line) in Wellingotn region with at least 3GB of data for my dad who needs only occasional internet access, such as checking emails and news every couple of days.

The cheapest plans seem to all start with something like $72/20GB with Slingshot, which I am on. Is there anything cheaper?

I also looked at the best rates for mobile broadband in a USB stick. 2 degrees offest 12 GB for $99 for 6 months and a device would cost $50. Is there anything better in that space? It's a pitty most data plans have it expiring in a month (with the exception of the above). Ideally he would get prepaid data so he buys only as much as he uses regardless of time.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Great. Thanks guys. It looks like Flip is the ticket and it is avaiable at the address.

For some reason it is not coming up in the telme website. Otherwise the comparison looks comprehensive.

IMO the telme website is a waste of time.

If you know the data usage is going to stay low, they are definitely the cheapest. Just be aware that they don't supply you a modem, you will need to get one from elsewhere (and therefore they won't support you if you have modem issues). If you are happy to help out with modem yourself then go ahead. Other ISPs will walk you through modem problems with the one they supply

I put my Mum on a 2degrees 3G stick for broadband a year or two ago. She was on the $20/mo 1GB option but I've just shifted her to the $99/6 months 12GB option. It's fine for her usage. We downloaded the Windows 8 upgrade in about 75 minutes last Saturday (with one of the 7.2Mbps HSUPA sticks).

For a landline she uses Vodafone Home Wireless, which is only $25/mo. It's priced like a landline, so free local calls and it has a local number, but actually runs over their cell network. They sell you (with a 1 year contract) a cordless phone that works with it, like this: http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/phone-fax/cordless-phones/auction-527569395.htm. My Mum likes her cordless phone so I bought one of the older boxes that you can plug your own phone into off trademe.

That's, er, $41.50/mo for broadband and phone. A little over $100 in setup/hardware costs. Might be able to do it cheaper (with higher initial costs) if we put her 3G stick on a router and plugged a VoIP ATA into it, but then if it breaks the helpdesks aren't going to be able to tell her how to fix it.
