Can't recall if I posted this link earlier, but for those interested in details of the install that I got with Snap / Enable, I've recorded the details here:

Everything went very smoothly. Only issue I've got is with DTMF tones - default setting (RTP + Inband) on the FritzBox works with the Snap voicemail, but fails with AirNZ/Telecom etc. Swap it to a setting (Inband) that works with the likes of AirNZ/Telecom is ok, but then can't access voicemail 8-(.
Not a big issue because admittedly I get all voicemail forwarded to my phone anyway.

Hmm, good question.
I paid an extra $50 to get the better FritzBox (7390 vs 7340) - otherwise it would have been free because I signed up for a 24 month contract.

Installation was free.
So that includes initial planning, tunnelling, feeding of fibre conduit (or whatever they call it), install of fibre from cabinet to house, install of box outside, install of jackpoint inside + Huawei router.

And I don't actually start paying til Dec 9 (first 2 months free), so by swapping I've actually saved a lot of money - and get a lot more 8-).

I'm very happy 8-).

Although I do feel that you have misled me with how useful fibre is 8-).

I had a very nice person from Telecom on my door step the other night and when I explained that I had just dumped Telecom to join Snap with a fibre connection, they informed me that fibre wasn't really that useful as I was still constrained by the link out of the country. Didn't seem to matter to him that I find moving large datasets to my office servers much better over fibre.
Decided the conversation was a waste of time when I talked about using our Smartphones with the FritzBox, at which point he asked "Is that what they call VoIP?".

Seriously - is that Telecom's strategy for Halswell/Christchurch?
"We haven't got ourselves sorted, so let's try and downplay how useful UFB is until we are sorted".

Also yes he was right to a certain extent. Telecom NZ do have a huge amount of international bandwidth compared to other ISPs.

Other way around for me. Snap has worked out very very very well and I have put a couple of other people over onto it as well.

Lol there is plenty of international bandwidth available in NZ. The chokepoint would be getting data from Christchurch to Auckland int hat context. And why wouldn't you choose Snap, they have a fairly good reputation and at elast are moving onto new technologies e.g. UFB and VDSL2.

Hi team,

Have purchased a new place in the awesome suburb of Halswell and it is able to be connected to UFB.

I have got a couple of concerns however and would like your input - particularly from OP.

1. How much does the install impact on the house? Dont want to be cutting up gardens/driveways etc.

2. Will the install techs do some Cat 6 wiring for a little extra whilst they are there?

The force is strong with this one!

Having had UFB also installed in Haslwell and loving it.

1. Little impact at my place the team did a borehole drill to get the ducting across my lawn and even replanted some trees they had to move.
Inside its all done in cupboards and the roof so apart from the external Fiber Point and the Internal Termination block no one would know.

2. I would talk to Snap and also Enable when the order is placed. I'm sure they would.

I have had the same issue with DTMF and the team told me to set to AUTO and its working for all now.

That sounds great.

You have put my mind at rest regarding impact on the house. It is a fairly flashy place and I dont really think the mrs will appreciate any negative impacts on the exterior.

Im not convinced that the FritzBox (even though it sounds like a fantastic bit of kit) will be able to stream media to my TV well enough to suit hence me wanting to use CAT wiring

The force is strong with this one!

In your blog pictures I don't see any battery backup in either the outside or indoor parts? I would have thought as part of the install for voice in emergency situations, it would have to have a battery backup somewhere?
