Hey guys, I can't remember any details from my old account so I've had to make a new one. Over time I've noticed a huge drop in dsl sync rates, going from 16Mbps down to 6-7Mbps. I never got round to figuring out what the problem was until now.

I'm on Telecom DSL, connected using a TP-Link TD-W8960N modem in Auckland. I'm approximately 300m away from the nearest cabinet. The modem is connected to the first jack into the house without the use of a filter. I've currently disconnected the other phones etc. because we've been having disconnection issues (any time someone rings, ADSL+PPP drop) and the line is crackly. I've tried different filters and cables to no avail.

Are there any other tests I can do myself? The phone issue seems to be separate from the low sync speed and I doubt chorus isn't going to rush to their feet to figure out why I'm only syncing at 6Mbps rather than 16Mbps.

Get a master filter/splitter installed first.

Given your attenuation, I'd expect the sync rate to be closer to what you used to have.

The fact the line drops, and there is voice interference as well suggests a physical wiring fault - the great majority of these are within the home, not outside, so installing a master splitter will isolate these problems.

Search box is your firend, but pretty easy to do with basic tools and reasonable experience. The most difficult part (and time consuming) is usually running the cables to where you want them, and working out the dogs breakfast of existing wiring (which you seem to have already done!).

Splitter about $30 from PBTech - can probably be installed in your demarc.

A few UY gel crimps, a length of CAT5 cable and your choice of outlet (RJ45 / BT etc.) completes the picture.

Yeah I have a feeling running some cat5 from the ground floor up to the 1st floor isn't going to be the easiest. The house isn't on piles either so no crawl space underneath.

Our demarc point is only one of the small 10*10cm boxes. Once I figure out how to unscrew the triwing screws I'll see how much room is available inside, but I doubt it is much. How else could you mount the splitter?

Unless there is a massive rats nest of wires in the demarc, there would probably be enough room for the splitter - they aren't that big. It should really go there, as the idea is to bypass all the other internal wiring.

You need to trace a spare pair from demarc to where you want the DSL jack-point. Green wires from master splitter go there, and new jack-point at other end.

I believe I should be able to do the install. It seems fairly logical provided I have the modem at the first jack point. Now that you mention running it on a spare wire pair it became much easier - not having to run extra wires.

In my head I see it as:

blue/white lead in -> Splitter Input
Splitter Voice Output -> Red/White Pair
Splitter ADSL Output -> Blue/Green Pair terminating at a dedicated RJ12 jack next to the first jack point

I'm fairly sure I understand the circuit in the house, but is there a good way to be sure (other than taking out the wires one by one and checking to see which jacks are still working?

If you really can not run a new seperate Cat5E or Cat6 from the demarc to where you want the modem then you are probably best served putting the splitter just before the first jack.

This is what you want to achieve:

Where I want the modem is where the first jack is. I can look into running some new Cat but it does look like it'll cause a bit of a head ache (plastered exterior + going up a level).

Edit: From the looks of it, I'll need to redo the connectors at the demarc anyway, seeing as insulation isn't the greatest. If I can fit the splitter in there I'd rather do that than up at the first jack.

Its normal practice to place the filter in the demarc, its was desiged to fit in those demarcs, the sholders of the filter fit around the screw hole mounts.

Your proposal to wire is correct, running a new cat5e from the demarc to the first jack will achieve little, the quality of the 1km or so of cable from the exchange is of similar performance.

Hmm so I've installed the splitter. The phone is working as it should but I can't seem to get the DSL signal.

At the splitter I've got green - > green and White - > blue. Doesn't seem to make a difference at the new BT jack where I connect the pair, I just don't get a connection.

Many times cables don't go where you think they go. Random joins along the way etc.
