I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend.

I live in a year two rollout area of Palmerston North. Our street is in the process of having all the pipes and tubes installed.

My friend lives off Park Road near to the Lido (see Chorus's UFB rollout map). He's not even part of the year three rollout.

He was wondering what criteria is used to decide what areas in the city will be done next, as he'd like to connect to UFB as soon as it's available.

Chorus has planned the UFB roll-out for the next few years so unless their place in those plans they would be out of luck.

His street will be covered in the UFB rollout, but at this stage the rollout year isn't known.

My understanding was that the priority for UFB in the first few years was school and business locations. So if you happen to live near a school, then odds are you'd get connected sooner rather than later. I figured that's why Argyle Ave got connected, because of Central Normal School being just round the corner. If my understanding is correct, then on Park Road your friend might be just out luck, depending on whether the UFB connections for Awatapu College/West End School or PNGHS spread far enough to include your friend's house.

Yeah, that sounds correct. He lives in Henare Street, and his house is a few hundred metres from Awatapu College. I live right next to a school so perhaps that's why mine and the nearby streets are all getting done right now.

BTW, how are you enjoying all the extra traffic that Wendys is causing in Argyle Ave?

He should get VDSL down Henare. The cable is fairly crappy down there but the cabinet is just up on Botanical opposite Awatapu.

It's not good. I now regularly have 10 second waits at the intersection with Aroha St. It's like living in Auckland all over again! ;)

The worst part though is the extra litter down the street, presumably from night time snackers... And from what I've heard, the Wendy's burgers aren't as good as they are in Auckland. I guess the novelty will wear off soon, esp now Carl Jrs has opened on Princess St...

Ok, I'll let him know about VDSl and tell him what it is. He can contact his ISP if we wants to look into getting that service.

Awatapu & West End are both on UFB but are direct connected on existing fibre to PM Exch - so no UFB in that general area till it rolls out that way

You use use long range wifi from a place with UFB installed, it needs to be < 5km, 5ghz ap's, and line of sight to get good throughput though > 50mbits otherwise you might aswell just get dsl connected instead. Im moving into a new property early next year which wont get UFB for atleast another 2 years by the looks of things (massey), possibly more but correct me if im wrong. So installing a dish at current place (henderson) with owners permission, and will use that as its about a couple km line of sight.
