What is the big deal? I did not mind some adds and believe the free and open advertising based web model is good. However youtube have overdone it to the point it is just straight out flippin annoying.

Do you think there needs to be an online advertising standards committee of some sort ?

I dont mind the youtube ads. I have purchased from one, and I know it helps keep the service viable.

Why not vote with your feet and use a competitor site?

Remember, the revenue from those ads is shared with people who put their efforts and time to create the content you consume.

As Tony says, surely you can find the same content in another site?

Oh, wait...

I don't know of any competitor sites that are much good they all seem sub par. I don't mind ads either as i said in the first post BUT THEY HAVE PUSHED IT TOO FAR!!! It is past ridiculous and harming the user experience. In addition to the top and side ads, they want you to sit through a pre roll every second video and after that you have to go round closing popup boxes 'f off'.

I completely understand the online advertising model but 3 compulsory 15 second pre rolls in 5 minutes and 'skip in 3 second' pre rolls on every other video is past annoying. Then your video window loses 1/3 of its space because of a stupid popup add, meaning if there is text to read at the bottom you have to restart the video grrr. My point is the level of advertising is making using the site painful.

Join the youtube html5 trial. No advertising. Not all videos are available in that format so you do have to spend some time searching for a copy.

I have never seen a popup on YouTube. Are you sure you don't have some malware on your box as well?

I mean the google adword text advert over-lays that cover the video window

I think he means the little box that shows on the bottom of the video when playing not an actual popup

Try Youtube Options for Chrome, you can block everything except the video, including the cesspit that is the comments section.

I was a little disturbed the other day when I was watching an episode of Mock The Week. Halfway through (about 15 mins), it stopped the episode to play an ad, and then resumed the episode where it had interrupted it. Never seen this before on Youtube, and no-one I spoke to has seen it either. Another step closer to broadcast-style advertising?

I dont see that many adverts on YouTube videos and dont mind waiting the x secs to turn one off....I usually go to Full Screen when I want to diminish any text at the bottom....also some of the revenue goes back to the owners/makers of the videos I watch which is ok by me...assuming they have taken the option up to monetize their videos....Laurie

Interesting thread I don't like adverts either however every 2nd weekend I have my boys come stay and we'd normally spend 3 - 5 hours a weekend watching random clips off youtube (normally a hour or two at a a time over different categories) and can't remember the last time I even saw a advert of any kind.

I don;t have a ad blocker on my browser and as far as I can remember haven't setup any options in the browser to block them the one site I get annoyed for these types though is nzherald.co.nz they're terrible and pretty much every 2nd clip which is annoying as hell since most news related clips are 1 - 2 mins in length or less.
