Hi,

Was wondering if someone could clear something up for me.

I own and live in a town house in Auckland (St Marys Bay).  I am part of a body corporate of 10 units in total.  The configuration is 5 adjoining town houses at the front of the property, and 5 adjoining at the back.  Only two of the units have direct street access, of which mine is one.  I have a security gate from the footpath into a courtyard at the front of my property.

Given this situation, what are the current rules with Chorus(?) around providing UFB to my unit (they are currently laying cables on the street outside my place).  I've read somewhere that UFB access to apartment complexes and maybe grouped town houses like mine are not currently automatically eligible without consent from all property owners.  If I have my facts right, any idea where I might stand?  I understand I might have to get the permission from the body corporate anyway, but might I have any issues with my ISP getting Chorus to do the work?

Here is a quick general answer.

The network being built down the street will not be built on down ROWs or to individual grouped houses
but provison for services to be extended down ROWs, small apartments etc will be made at the time of the common network install

When you as an individual apply for connection to your ISP and Chorus hasnt already extended the network then
1 Your request is put on hold (by Chorus)

2 Permisson is sort from the body corp / owners etc to do the extending of the common network on to/through private property (for all units) (thats when it can get tricky) (by Chorus)

3 A design (pathways, hardware etc) is confirmed (Design Contractor/ Chorus/ Owner rep etc) - 

4 Chorus contactors install the network extension/s 

5 Your request is released to the installers and your connected.

Thanks for the information.  But what say the installation won't be down a shared driveway, but from the road across my front courtyard to my town house?  Sorry I didn't make this clear in my original email.

When your service provider requests UFB service, Chorus will check the address and it will flag up as a multi dwelling unit. It will be passed on to the Chorus consents team, who will write to the owners (or in this case the body corporate) advising that one of the occupants wants UFB. An authorised person within the body corporate will need to sign the consent forms and return them to Chorus.

It is likely that the body corporate will not give their consent until a meeting has been held and the motion has been voted on by the members. The body corporate may also delay proceedings by requesting detailed design notes showing exactly what work Chorus intends to carry out before they give consent.

The body corporate may also consider allowing Chorus to pre-wire all dwellings for UFB at the same time. The benefit of this is that when other occupants request service there will be no more installation work required in any common areas and thus a faster installation for all subsequent requests.

Generaly they wont design an access point for one unit to be connected one way and the other units to be connected a diferent way

and if im not mistaken that majority of town houses around Freemans Bay already have common ducting and conduiting to each unit to supply copper service and these will be reused if @ all practical to provision UFB Services to the units

If I may tag onto this question; Chorus's subbies are currently laying UFB along a part of Tremaine Avenue, Palmerston North.

Some of the driveways they're crossing have 4 or 5 flats down a ROW. In this case, would they allow for 4 or 5 fibre optic tubes to terminate at the green roadside pillar, incase all the dwelings may want UFB installed?

If its relatively new and has ducting and that ducting is in good cindition then they can just do it. Had the same situation at an address in albany but 2 parts of the ducting had collapsed. They needed body corp consent and got it. Put the order in july and its being finalized on monday
