Dropped into McDonalds in Te Puke while passing through to check some work stuff using their free wifi.

Their wifi was so slow it was almost unusable so I took a speedtest reading..

Noone else using the free wifi in the store either!!

I've used free wifi at other maccas, none so slow as this one though!!

That latency is pretty high.

It looks like the position of the wireless was not very good at all and you got lots of interference thus making it useless to use. I presume you where actually inside the store trying to use their wireless

Yes, sitting inside .... i'm overcap on my 3g so thought i'd snag some lunch and free wifi.

I'm not sure about the position ... it is not a big store but they seem to use a lot of wif-fi busting steel in construction these days I guess.

I get similar speeds from their Whangaparaoa branch (which dosent advertise the Wifi anymore - they use to, then it broke and was gone for ages but is quietly back again).

But usable to do FB/Twitter updates ;)

Mc Donalds have bad wifi, try your local library. The best I have seen is PN Library, free wifi at 4Mb/s with a tone of other users online.

Never done a speed test, but whenever Ive tried McDonalds Wifi its always really slow to the point of nearly unusable. Seems pa for the course.

Same here, had this experience at several branches when I've dropped in for err a salad. Seems McD's Wifi is almost useless if you want to do any serious work...

As i understand, they throttle your speed.
You also only get 50mb per day.
And i think they block anything other than port 80 - so no pop/smtp access.

I've used it plenty of times and to be honest, I'd probably be their typical user.
Check Facebook, tweet that I am at Salad Hut and maybe check the footy scores.
Works ok for that purpose, but don't try updating any apps or uploading photos to the web.

Ive also struck the occassion where they limit the number of users on it at one time. Especially at some of the larger metropolitan stores

Not surprising, all the access points are just in one big TelstraClear managed VPN with a nationwide user limit and you can get more than 50MB per day just log off and wait an hour unless you have an IOS device then good luck with that, come back next week.
