Hello,

My flat I am currently staying at is getting UFB through these guys http://www.thecloud.net.nz/go/ufb/plans trouble is they do not provide any sort of routor. Now this flat is full of students and they are not wealthy going on a 30mbit plan I would normally get something decent but as I am moving into my house once it is finished in a month or so they need something cost effective.
Can you use any router or do I have to find a specific one like the sales rep at "the cloud" told me?
Would this do?

Also is anyone here with them for anything if so how is there throughput?

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure you need a FTTx port available for the UFB to plug. If you sign up on a 1-2 year contract most ISP's will provide a modem for free otherwise they cost between $250-400 NZD (gst incl).

This is the one my ISP has provided me: http://www.connectplay.co.nz/content/innbox-v50u-0

It seems UFF Provide that part?

"Can I use the modem/router and other equipment I have now for my broadband or do I need to replace it?
If you currently have broadband, your modem and router are both located in the same box. With fibre broadband, there will be two separate ‘boxes.' One of these boxes is the modem, which can be located almost anywhere in your home. The modem is provided free by Ultrafast Fibre when we connect your home into the network. The second ‘box’ you’ll need is the router, which is a small box you can set on your desk or bench top. This router box is provided by your broadband service provider and the price is sometimes part of your connection package. Some telecommunications service providers may recommend that you retain your existing wireless router or provide an additional device in order to deliver specific services that they provide."

Actually I believe you're right as Chorus seems to be providing the internal fibre termination point router for free. In the future that may not be the case..

Any wireless router rated at or above your fibre speed will be fine for your internet connection assuming it can give you a full signal ( normally cheaper ones have harder times going through walls etc.. ). Keep in mind you may want faster speeds if you plan on sharing files with your flat mates.

Chorus (or the LFC) supply an ONT for free. This is not a router, it's merely a L2 media converter that also has 2 voice ports.

Most ISP's will require VLAN10 tagging on the WAN interface. The WR741 doesn't support this. If you wanted to use a WR741 you would need to ask your ISP if Untagged UNI was available.

FYI it's not chorus for hamilton, its Ultra Fast Fibre limited.

I believe they will install the ONT but its up to the ISP/you to get a router to plug into it.
