Hi guys,

Got a call form Vision Stream today, asking if alright to come do my fiber install tomorrow. I was told originally someone would come scope the job out and then later a team would come do the actual work. Not from Vision Stream, they want to come and get everything done tomorrow... Figured best I delay this (2 weeks).

I've been wanting to talk to someone about exactly where (and how) the fiber run will go. I've bought a cabinet, CAT6, UPS etc all ready to go. Been holding off on it to make sure there's no issues with where I want to place it and the ONT.

Best to describe my situation via pics.

Aerial view. Red line what I think ideal fiber run would be. Blue X is where POTS originates.

Existing POTS (weird that it's at the back of the property quite far from the street). Not sure if they can use this duct or not. If I pull on it, it seems loose...

Drive looking out to street (Section A). Don't think there'd be an issue running the fiber along this fence and semi bury it - already water mains running down there and visible for a good portion of the run.

Drive (Section B). Not to sure what they'd do here, all concrete.

Retaining wall between Section B & C. This is closest to the road you can get under the house, earlier it's all concrete/garage etc. No access.

Section C is just under the house, nice and easy.

South side of house coming up from under the house.

Easy to run under the decking.

I'd like to run duct up next to down pipe into garage roof. (Probably just another 80mm down pipe.)

There is access to the garage roof, so once the cable/fiber is in there it's easy to run down to a cabinet. I need the duct to garage roof to get from the garage to the rest of the house (under) for CAT6 and other cable runs.

Ideally I'd like the fiber to use the same duct to enter the garage. (Why have a separate one, and holes in the house...) ONT to be installed in the cabinet. IF fiber can be run in POTS duct, would still ideally take this path and duct to garage.

Now that they're wanting to come out and do the job all in one day and not scope the thing first I'm a bit lost. Shall I go ahead put in the duct and cabinet? (Guess I need to for my own cabling anyway, but if needed would do whatever required to accommodate the fiber run - e.g. bend radius)

How does the ETP fit into my plans? What is it's purpose? Should I have this under the decking near my duct going into the roof?

Any advice/thoughts?

EDIT: I'm in Auckland.

They will want to put it by your main TV (but can be flexible). But looking at the distance and location (being a rear section) theres some fairly large speedhumps in your way for considering it a normal install..

ETP is the external entry point. Its where the fibre feed turns from the combined feed into the single strand(s) and is fed through the wall to the ONT. Has to go in a fairly close location to it.

Does your copper reach your house under the ground already?

I would have thought they would use the existing ducting and blow the Fibre through that?

I'm pretty sure they will put the ONT wherever you want it - there are some installers who lurk around these forums, I'm sure one will be along soon to help you out.

I would have just got them to come tomorrow than wait another 2 weeks.

Lol funny.. google vision stream. Check out all the news within the last 24hrs being announced they won part of the contract to lay it for Chorus.. perhaps thats why it got fasttracked :)

From what I've heard they may use existing POTS duct if it's unblocked and easy... But I'm unsure where it runs too. Not that far from another road. Dunno - maybe, then that would make things easier.

Re vision steam - I did think it a bit weird getting a call about doing it the very next day.

Typically from the pics I've seen; they drill through the wall from ETP then run a duct on the inside up into the ceiling - would like to avoid this extra (and ugly) duct. And assume don't really need quick/easy access to ETP, so can be hidden under decking.

If that wasn't clear - yes copper from under ground. Just unsure of where exactly that conduit runs too. Don't really mind the wait. End of my Slingshot billing cycle today, so paying for the next month anyway. So probably only get Snap to switch over then.

Excellent pics. How far is the total distance of the red line?

Oh yes - was going to mention. Approx 65m. (Anyway well well within the 100m limit I think.) So shouldn't be any issues from a distance perspective.

Vison stream are one of the three Service Contract Companys working for Chorus - they have the Auckland / Northland Area Contract.

They are the ones that would come out and do the site visit anyway - they just want to do it on the same day - probably to because thay have to do more than just the visit in their schedule.

As for the ONT location - that is up to you and the installer to sort out the location - 'the by the TV' was an optional sugestion from Chorus - but it has to be hard mounted on to a wall

If the existing conduit, that the copper line comes in, is suitable then they will reuse it - if not it is up to the install contracator to build an alternative (at chorus's expence - within reason)

The ETP will be placed at the end of the conduit so a transition joint can be installed between the external fibre (from the road) and the one that goes throught to the ONT

All the ducting/conduiting for the fibre cables will be done by the installer

Even in this sort of case where I need ducting for CAT6 anyway? Seems silly doing it separately. Just want things as neat and tidy as possible...
