We currently have an old wireless plan with Iconz based on the Kordia Extend Wireless towers.   We have been told with very short notice that Iconz are discontinuing the plan and we can be transferred to Farmside for three months.  After three months I believe that the Extend Wireless service is being discontinued altogether.

Can anybody confirm that this is indeed the case and the service will be completely discontinued?  It has been working very well for us and we have no other good broadband option (satellite being an option, but not good) so are very keen to figure out whether we can continue our wireless plan with any provider.

We cannot get ADSL due to our distance from the exchange and the RBI is not planned for our area for the next 5 years.

I can see nothing on the web about this, which is why I am asking here.

Thanks!

If you wish I could run a line check to see if you're able to get broadband, has been a few changes - if you direct message me your address / phone number I will run this. Else I am afraid you're in the same boat as my parents, unable to get any decent broadband apart from Farmside.

Yea Araneo would be the go wouldn't it? I thought they pretty much just used Kordia towers throughout the country?

Depends how much Kordia are charging for tower and lino rental. Where abouts are you based? As there are regional WISPs (wireless ISPs) all over the place these days?

This started happening ~12 monts ago.
Im surprised you were still connected to it.

What area are you in?
As said above, there is a WISP in each region now around the country and they collectively have better coverage, pricing and speeds than the kordia extend network.

I was connected to Extend for 8 years before ditching it at about this time last year, and moving to RBI.  Even though RBI is not scheduled to be rolled out in your area for 5 years, if you can get even 1 bar of Vodafone 3G signal at your place using a handset, it is quite possible that you could have a usable signal when connected via an outdoor Yagi and the Huawei Router that Vodafone provide as part of the RBI kit.

We have an 8-element Yagi installed which gives a reliable signal of -65dBm into the router.  I won't go so far as to say the service is as reliable as Extend, which basically ran like clockwork.  However, it was slow and in these days of streaming video, it didn't cut it anymore.  We are now getting 5Mbps+ via RBI, vs. 1Mbps with Extend.

If you PM your email address to me, I can send you a PDF flyer from the installer we used.

Hi PKB

Farmside will not leave you out in the cold. You will most likely be transferred onto their sister company Araneo. And yes Araneo is already at most extend sites.

If you would like more reassurance and for me to check on what is happening with your connection PM me your details.

Cheers

Hi - just to clarify the situation from Kordia's perspective. We have grandfathered the service, so we are not connecting new customers to the network - unless your retail provider has existing CPE that they can re use. You can change service providers - ie transfer your connection from one retail provider to another. All existing customers will be supported on the network for at least another 12 months.

As we still have a large number of users on the platform, Kordia will provide at least 6 months notice to the service provider before we shut the platform down and will work to esnure as little disruption as possible.

Thanks, M Goodman - Kordia
