Hi

We got fibre installed at our house today. I was at home and my wife was handling the installation. Apparently when they finished they tested the link and said it was running at 14mbs but it would get faster over the next day or so.

What would be the reason for it getting faster? Running speed tests on the fibre vs existing shows a huge improvement in upload speed but download is around the same or even slightly slower.

Thanks

Mike.

That doesn't sound right, what modem / router are you using? And are you connected using Ethernet or wireless?

i have also heard of this - but this was not the case with my fiber installation.

aparently the exchange will do a latency/ping test/ attenuation test over a 24 hour period and build a profile for your connection, which will update randomly which creates a stable connection for your network, it all sounds complicated bit it happens, as the exchange figures all this out you should see a speed increase at your end....

This sounds correct (Kind of) for VDSL (well its more like a week not 24 Hours) but for UFB it sounds completely wrong..

You should be able to get 30 Mbps Down and 10Mbps Up (if its a 30/10Mbps connection) as soon as its installed (testing locally to NZ)

If not there there is a fault someplace.. 14Mbps Down on a UFB Connection sounds wrong..

I presume you are hardwired into the UFB Connection but saying that even on a Wireless Connection you should be able to get 30/10 quite easily (unless you are too far away from the Access Point/there its lots of Wireless Interference or you have a really old computer)

Edit: just read you are on Wireless.  Test Via Wired Ethernet and I presume your Wireless Router is not inside a Metal Cabinet inside your house?

That's definitely NOT true for UFB (it is for DSL). You should be able to get your full speed straight away.

Yeah I'm guessing Wireless G is in play here, I used to only get 17-19 mbps MAX through my Wireless G AP, so calculating in losses etc 14mbps sounds about right.

I really wish UBF/High Speed internet providers gave users a nice user guide on how to get the most out of the connection, ie, using adequate router / AP / cabling / NICs / PC etc , otherwise it'll become a total farce and it wont drive local online services.

Possibly, however im sure by default the telecom AP's are set to auto.
Does your laptop support Wireless N ?

Best thing to do is test over a wired connection as said above.

Presumably it is to do with some back end tweaking that happens once the connection is live.

Shoulds be connecting with wireless N - have been testing it with an Iphone and Ipad using speedtest to citylink.

Interestingly when I go into the modem wireless config it says that the wireless is running at 64mbs.

I have tried it right next to the modem and in other rooms.  Slightly better performance the closer I am, but still getting up to a max of 14mbs down and around 8-9mbs up on a 30:10 plan.

I guess wait and see what happens over the next few days and then ring telecom if it doesnt improve - I guess they could test by temporarily bumping me up to 100:30mbs plan ;-)

Hi Guys,

There is no "tweaking" for UFB.  If you got a 30/10 connection then that's what you should be getting (or very close, allowing for TCP overheads etc) immediately.

The ONT is capable of delivering 1Gbps on the Ethernet side, the fibre is not a limiting factor here either.

The limiting factors are mostly your router and/or Wi-Fi signal.

So if they've provided you a router, and you're not getting 30/10 or very close to it on a wired connection, you should be getting them to address that.

HTH

Lol.... Really?!

Get a laptop and a wire. Not a light weight phone or tablet.

Sounds like a low end router if its N Speed is only 65mbps. You've invested in UFB, now invest in a decent dual band wireless N router.

Or better yet, wired connection!

It's your only connecting at 65Mbps your wireless speeds are pretty much spot on with no issues.

Wireless isn't a replacement for a cabled Ethernet connection. It's merely a complementary product that will always deliver slower performance.

I'd be quite pleased to have a consistent 65mbps speed from my N router
