This is kind of ridiculus but here it goes.
My friend has adsl broadband at the moment. He wants vdsl but cant afford it. His birthday is coming up in a few months time.
Is it possible for me to buy a vdsl line for him without him knowing? Like he often leaves me at his house when he goes to work. I could set up then. Also, he currently has adsl broadband with telecom. Can i buy vdsl from someone like snap while his adsl is with telecom?
I know this sounds really stupid. But its a gift he will love. Please dont hate

You will have problems disconnecting or transferring the existing broadband service if you're not registered as the line owner or authorised to make changes.

I can convince his wife to take care of the aurhorization part. But he will know as soon as he sees a bill? Cant he keep paying for adsl and not use the service and have vdsl on the same line and use that instead?

Not possible to have both on the same line.

Most efficient way of doing it would be to convince him to switch to the VDSL provider for ADSL services and ensure the wife is listed on the account then have her upgrade to a VDSL plan.

I would recommend you look into VDSL carefully regarding the charges and make sure everything would be as you and the wife expected.

You could add VDSL2 onto the second pair into the home which would be a new naked install and incur a ~$400 installation fee

VDSL2 requires a master filter if it's POTS on connection so a Chorus tech will need to visit anyway which will probably cost around $200

Be very careful here as you might be biting off more then you can chew even though you are friends.

I have been in flatting situations where the Internet has been included as part of the deal, and where possible, I have arranged my own connection.

People can get weird and upset if you interfere with their internet or even tell them there is something wrong with it. Some will even seek to blame every Internet problem they have on the new flatmate.

Take it or leave it - but my advice is take care of your own business and let him take care of his. Find some other way to honor his birthday.

If you are asking can you keep the landline phone service with the existing provider whilst changing the dsl service to a different provider the answer is it depends, are they on contract? who is the current provider?

If you are asking can you have two DSL services/connections on the one line the answer is no.

However..
Most phone cables from the street to the house actually contain two lines, the 2nd is normally un-used.

You can indeed have phone/dsl on line1 from provider1 and naked vdsl2 on line2 from provider2.

You will need to make it very clear to the ISP when signing up that you want the service installed on the 2nd line that's not currently active/in use.

Ok i see.

Just one more thing. If there are 2 lines as you say, does that mean i can run the vdsl and adsl connection at the same time or not? I m just wondering..

And i plan to sign up to snap with naked broadband with no contract. How long does it take them to setup?

Let me understand this please. Will you pay for the ongoing monthly costs on this new plan? And your friend will still pay the ongoing monthly costs for the existing plan?
