Hello everyone,

I've noticed services like Hulu/Netflix and Youtube are performing very poorly today (I access Netflix/Hulu with a DNS proxy, Youtube is native). Sites such as Gmail and Twitter are responding slowly, Steamworks is unusable etc. This is far from the norm for me with Compass, I'm on their Mammoth plan (unlimited, so I assume in quite a nasty pool) but it's usually good as gold.

Their issue today seems to be international, specifically via Vocus.

Traceroute shows:
Tracing route to google.com [74.125.237.110]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms DD-WRT [192.168.1.1]
2 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 10.10.10.10
3 17 ms 17 ms 17 ms lnssp-r2-radius.ak.compass.net.nz [203.152.96.101]
4 17 ms 16 ms 17 ms gi7-6.cs2.ak.compassnet.co.nz [203.152.100.224]
5 17 ms 17 ms 19 ms 195.host-203-152-107.compassnet.co.nz [203.152.107.195]
6 1377 ms 1378 ms 1399 ms as18119.cust.bdr01.akl02.akl.VOCUS.net.au [114.31.203.45]

Etc etc. As you can see in the bolded hop, as soon as we've crossed the Tasman via Vocus, the latency goes crazy. Nationally, things are just fine, which makes me think Compass have an issue with an upstream peer.

Trademe, for example, is fine:

Tracing route to trademe.co.nz [202.162.73.2]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms DD-WRT [192.168.1.1]
2 2 ms 1 ms 1 ms 10.10.10.10
3 17 ms 17 ms 17 ms lnssp-r2-radius.ak.compass.net.nz [203.152.96.101]
4 17 ms 18 ms 17 ms gi7-6.cs2.ak.compassnet.co.nz [203.152.100.224]
5 17 ms 17 ms 16 ms 195.host-203-152-107.compassnet.co.nz [203.152.107.195]
6 61 ms 17 ms 18 ms trademe.ape.nzix.net [192.203.154.55]
7 19 ms 18 ms 18 ms 203.57.145.130
8 18 ms 18 ms 17 ms www.trademe.co.nz [202.162.73.2]

I thought I'd post here in-case anyone from Compass engineering reads this forum, the phone operator (who refreshed my port for me and went through the normal troubleshooting with) was unaware of a deeper issue and said she would escalate - I thought I'd try and get some similar stories here.

I'm not here to rag on Compass, I really like them as an ISP - but it would be great to get this sorted.

Cheers

Hi nzjc, thank you for your post and the feedback on your connection speeds. Very informative.

Can you please PM me your Compass account details? I'll make sure our Operations team is across this fix. Kind regards,

Ryan @ Compass

Got it. Thanks for that. Any luck after the port refresh?

Nope - it's still showing huge ping across the Tasman and downloads are very poor. National downloads (such as an ISO from Citylink FTP) are screaming in, however.

Good to hear. Please continue to monitor your connection over the next few days and let us know if the performance drops again so we can look into it. Regards,

Ryan @ Compass
