Thought I'd share my VDSL2+ experience over the past two months since hooking up for anyone that is looking into getting it and providers etc.

My ISP is HD (http://hd.net.nz) and I'm currently on a normal VDSL2+ connection and get my landline from Telecom.

Anyways I signed up about a month ago for VDSL2 at my old residency. At the time we knew we were going to be moving but unsure how soon ( could've been 1 month, 3 months etc.. ).

My experience at the old location was actually a little bit poor. The house wiring really showed when switching to VDSL and our download speeds dropped from 16mbits to 8.9mbits on down speeds but our up speeds increased to 5.9mbits which was quite a nice boost. This was in the Albany area and we were 1.7km from the exchange ( no cabinet ). HD was very helpful and was ready to get Chorus to come out and install a master splitter. The cost was a bit much and considering we were going to be moving I held off.

Fast forward four weeks and we're moved into a new house that has a master splitter and Cat5e star network to every single room. HD said our VDSL2 speeds would be around 22/10 given the distance to the cabinet. Today we finally got the connection moved over due to some Chorus mess and we're actually running at 40/10 which is nearly full line speed.

So far speed tests indicate HD is really giving us 100% our attainable rate nationally and internationally we're getting about 6 down and 6 up which compared to our old ADSL2 is really great ( was normally like 2-3/0.8 on Telecom ADSL2+ ).

I think the wiring of a house REALLY begins to massively show when it comes to VDSL and encourage anyone getting the service to make sure you have a master splitter installed otherwise you're likely to reverse in speeds and go slower.

Sadly, but not really, we're not going to be on VDSL2 for long as our UFB install should be coming in the next few weeks!

A master filter is vital for all VDSL installs.

I'm really surprised you even got an install at the first premises. That's well outside the VDSL2 spec and all you end up doing with such a poor connection is creating the potential for crosstalk which can them impact everybody who's closer than you.

Unless you have a dedicated xDSL only jackpoint a master filter is mandatory for VDSL2.

No it's not? If it's a naked VDSL on the only jackpoint off the demarc, it's not required?

(Not that telecom offers naked VDSL (or any), which I assume is why you said it)

I'd say very very few premises are going to have a single jackpoint off the DEMARC. More commonly a master splitter would be installed off the DEMARC and voice services go through existing wiring and a dedicated xDSL wire is plugged directly into a modem right there to avoid noise.

Never heard of "VDSL2+". Please advise the ITU specification reference code.

HD is advertising it as VDSL2+ but probably just a tiny mistake it's just VDSL2.. whoops.

Hey,

I am also a HD customer on their VDSL service. only been on it for approx 1 month aswell. I am approx 30-50 metres from my cabinet but the roadside wiring/cabling is shockingly bad here in Epsom as Chorus have informed me. Whenever I got line work done and they have called to confirm completion they usually have a quick chat and fill me in with some info. Speeds are 50/8.9 still stuck on 8b, but am very pleased with speeds.  I have played around with my internal wiring to get it short and sweet.  XDSL splitter was installed previously but I ripped that out and poked a direct Cat5E solid core from demarcation point under house into office crimped on RJ11 jammed that into the back of my FritzBox 7390.  Complete default settings give me 45/8.9 shaving SNR to 8dB gives no CRC errors and pops me up to 50/8.9.
My advice put as little as possible between modem and demarcation.  Go naked and get VoIP/Skype.  All land line are useful for is telemarketers anyways...

I have just decided to go onto VDSL2 as my street isn't getting UFB anytime soon.

First of, the Chorus subcontractor initially refused to connect VDSL2 without installing a master filter - which I was told by my ISP (Full Flavour Media) isn't required but is suggested.

I bravely made the decision to go without, and if the speed wasn't sufficient I would get that done.

Anyway after a muck-around, the Chorus subcontractor was instructed to do the switch over without the master filter install.

Got connected yesterday, with connection rates of 43MBps/8MBps.

I've fairly close to the cabinet - and find those connection rates fairly decent. I may in a few months get a master filter installed to push it up slightly.

I can gladly say, I am enjoying the upstream increase more than the downstream. Remote Desktop to my VPS is smooth, and Dropbox syncing is so quick!

ur apologies again on behalf of Chorus, rather incredible the amount of pressure we had to put on them just to get the job through (and Chorus blame sub-contractors who have their own opinion about how things are done!).

Great to see you are having a good experience on day one of your connection.

I can definitely say, your support has gone above the call of duty - fantastic. Have lost that feeling of love from Orcon - in the last few months. I have been complaining about web browsing speeds dropping at peak/offpeak.

Definitely glad to have the huge speed increase. Thanks again to the guys at Full Flavour Media.
