Seen a few threads from two years ago about broadband on Waiheke... is anything different (better) in 2013?

Not a lot.
There is a WISP - Ynet.
Waiheke was cabinetised not too long ago (I cannot remember what year, and where it was up to in the threads you have read).
A fair chunk of the populated area on the island gets reasonable ADSL2, VDSL is available AFAIK.
I get about 13Mbps down and 900kbps up where I live on the Island, a lot of people get 10meg plus.
Fibre is due 2015 apparently.
