My question, I apparently have a splitter for internet, which apparently means I can use only one jack point. Is there any way I can use a second jack point? Is the only option to use a really long cord? I may have to get the splitter taken out I guess, not sure why they're popular in the first place.

Thanks for any helpful info on this, I already wasted 5-6 hours figured what is up with my other jacks that used to work fine.

If you do have a splitter installed, you can only use one jack point to plug in an ADSL modem. The other wires coming out of the splitter go to your telephone only jack points. You can have more than one of the latter.

They are popular because they prevent a whole raft of xDSL related problems, and provide a far better experience.

The downside is usually a lack of forethought when planning the location of the xDSL outlet, putting it in an obscure location, rather than a central useful one.

The best option would be for someone to move the master jack to a better location for you.

Second best option is use a long extension cord on the jack you have.

Worst option is to bypass the splitter - it's put in for a sound reason. This would mean you may get working xDSL at other outlets around the building, depending on the quality of the wiring it was put in to isolate, but the speed and reliability will almost certainly suffer.

If you only have 2 jacks and the second jack is not connected to anything else and the wiring is decent quality, you could in theory swap them. Unfortunately it's highly likely that the DSL only jack was put in at the same time as the splitter so it will likely have the good wiring and the second jack probably has crap wiring and other things connected which is what the splitter was put in to islolate... As above, getting the splitter taken out is a bad idea.

EDIT: Best idea: Get someone like coffeebaron on these forums to sort you out. ;-)

Is there an easy route to get a cable from the ADSL outlet to the spot where you want to put the modem? Normally the modem goes near the ADSL outlet and if thats not where you use it you may be able to run an Ethernet cable to your computers or a router or Ethernet switch that are located in another room. Mine is above the linen cupboard but the ADSL cable goes to an outlet near the computer where the modem sits.

Time to find a new industry!

They are better because they are the only correct technical solution anything else will compromise performance.

I would put in place a good gigabit ethernet cabling if I were you, but if that is not an option, then ethernet over the power cable might be another option to consider. http://www.wiseguys.co.nz/computer-hardware/networking/ethernet-over-power

Don't know anything about the quality of the gear that Wiseguys are selling, so you might want to do your own research of what is good (and I am sure people here on Geekzone might be able to help you out as well).
