Hi

I'm getting VDSL installed in the next few days. My ISP is providing the Technicolor TG589VN. I'm not sure if this will work well with an AirPort Extreme (currently used with a Draytek Vigor 120 using the PPPoE/PPPoA bridge).

I understand that VDSL is PPPoE so no bridge required, but has anyone used the Technicolor with an AirPort Extreme?

Also, what VDSL modems are people using and recommending? I see the ZyXEL P870H-51a v2 mentioned, is this still the way to go?

Cheers

The ZyXELs (IMO) are cheap junk.

I sold about 20 before putting the breaks on (numerous issues) and have since switched to a unit called the "Innbox V50-U".

Thanks I'll take a look. Do these work well with other routers (eg Apple AirPort Extreme)?

As always suggest getting a separate modem for bridge mode and router.

What's your take on the DrayTek Vigor 2750 VDSL Modem?

This, we have sold 50 or more of them, with 1 issue across all of them (bad power supply), Zyxel have a stellar history, and have a solid reputation. We consistently get higher sync rates with them than other modems.

I've personally deployed a large number of Zyxel's for VDSL2 also. The vast majority are in bridge mode and they work flawlessly, however I have seen a few issues pop up running them as a router requiring the occasional reboot.

As a side question, any wiring experts in Auckland (North Shore) who can tidy up my phone wiring coming into my house?

It's not in terrible shape, but I'd like it in top shape. :) Master filter already installed a few years back.

Another +1 for the Zyxel in bridge mode. If buying again I'd buy a Draytek 2750, can tweak it a whole lot more if you're into that kinda thing.

They tend to work fine. You can run them in bridge mode as well and have another modem take over routing assuming the router you want to use supports PPPoE.

We've sold a couple to customers needing VPN. They have worked fine and the support from the distributor has been great.

In all cases we were using the ZyXEL as a router.

Issues include:

- Random lockups that only a power reset requires
- Customer looses access to the admin page (but internet keeps working). Power cycle temporarily resolves this
- Admin status page tries to tell us there is no VDSL connection when in fact there is

...I could go on....

The Innbox V50-U while not perfect, has been well tested by a team in Hamilton and passed their stringent tests. We've had the odd issue but nothing support from the distributor hasn't been able to solve.

I'd attempt bridging what they give you before buying something new.
