Friend has an old Netgear DG632 modem/router on the Actrix network. The firmware is adsl1. I upgraded the firmware to V 3.6.0C_38 which is supposed to make it adsl2+ capable.

However, there is no increase in speed - still 6.5Mbps down. Actrix says the line speed as reported by Chorus is 7Mbps.

This house has the fibre enabled cabinet right outside the fence so distance is not an issue! When I had adsl in this street I was getting 14Mbps from that same cabinet.

My question is whether we should expect immediate adsl2+ performance on changing the modem or whether there needs to be some re-configuration for this to occur?

Post the modem xDSL line stats so we can have a look,

Have you also tried another modem?

Can't post line stats as that terrible modem gui just didn't have them. At least I couldn't find them after carefully hunting through every option.

I'm trying to get another modem to try but my old ones are either adsl1 or Telecom ones. Battling with a Speedtouch to try and configure it for another network!

OK, got a Telecom 585V8 going on the Actrix connection. The speed has doubled to 13.69Mbps down so that is encouraging. However, I used to get 14.5 Mbps from further away. Margin of error??

I will post the line stats as I would like a comment on the errors recorded for 40 min up time. Is this error rate normal?

G992.5 annex A

1,208/17,380 Max

1,176/15,670 Bandwidth

Atten 1.0/0.0 Remember the cabinet is literally over their fence!

Sn Margin 12.5/12.5

FEC Errors 19,143/0

CRC Errors 15,420/1

HEC Errors 0/0

"fibre enabled cabinent"?? are you meaning a ADSL2+ cabinent or a UFB one? If its a UFB one it doesnt matter where you are on ADSL2+ if its a ADSL2+ one theres no telling where your cables run (I have seen properties where the cable actually runs away from the road the house faces onto, to the next road over then loops back around)

Also theres things like Cable faults internal etc. a 0.0db attenuation is unlikely most probably is not showing the true attenuation....

Do you have a splitter installed?

Your line speed is consistent with adsl2+

you wouldnt have noticed any real life improvement. If you want real life improvement go vdsl ufb, warpspeed

Also There is a chance your modem was doing adsl2 speeds prior ... Did you check the modem stats before? I know that because i had a telecom dlink modem that was supposedly adsl1 but i was getting adsl2 line stats on their network. That was years ago.

Thanks, guys, for replies. It is a fibre to ADSL cabinet. The UFB one is 100 metres away! I am sure the cabling won't be convoluted in this street.

Should have mentioned no master splitter

This is not my connection, Joker, as mentioned in the opening post. I am on UFB!! Also mentioned earlier, I couldn't show the old modem's stats as that Netgear 632 didn't have them available to the gui.

Friend is happy to have a speed doubling but I was wondering whether the error rates were as expected.

That is quite a high error rate compared to what I get.

I normally get several CRC errors a day.

I am 170m from the cabinet.
Modems report either 0 or 1db attn.  (Vigor 120 & AR440S respectively)

If you are quoting ADSL sync rates, you're not on UFB, unless you have more than one connection to your premises.

Seems like some reading comprehension lessons are needed!

Mine did, on the first page that comes up there was 2 buttons at the bottom of it, one for the stats, and one to connect and disconnect.

In anycase, its a pretty useless modem. best thing I did was swap it for a dg834 when the oppertunity arose. Web interface on the 632 would stop loading when it was under high load.
