Hi all

Is anybody else having problems with their slingshot broadband speeds? My connection has just gone to the sh*tters and I'm wondering if I'm the only one. From Monday all my websites have been taking forever to open and trying to download a 1.9Mb .pdf file takes me more than 5 minutes :( I've ran both my anti-virus (AVG) and spyware (Spybot) programs, both updated, and they say everything's ok on my system. I rang up slingshot and they say all's good on their end. I even tried changing routers but it's still slow

If anyone can shed some light on this I'd appreciate it, as I need my internet for most of my uni work

What plan are you on? Try doing a speed test at www.nzdsl.co.nz and post results.
Also which adsl router do you have, maybe try to update firmware if its too old.

This is what nzdsl says I'm going at.

Download Speed: 61 kbps (7.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 123 kbps (15.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

But this is what I'm actually getting.

I normally get a file this size in less than a minute :(

I'm with slingshot's 6GB/month plan and I'm nowhere near reaching my data cap (still 4.39GB left)

Hi,

We  have just increased capacity, so I would be very surprised if you are experiencing slow speeds from our end.  No recent probs.  We have very low contention at peak times, let alone out of peak.

regards
John

This is quite strange, I am also with Slingshot on a 256K plan and never had any such problem. As John said that hyave increased capacity so these problems should not occur, atleast not in off peak times. Your upload seems fine its just the download, it seems as the spped has been throttled for some reason, check with Slingshot. What does visibill show, does it show your data plan as 2MB or 64K, if it is throttle visibill will show the data as 64K Throttled or something.

Hi where abouts are you.  I have spoken with Telecom tonight and there are some issues on a Christchurch DSLAM causing dialup speeds on ADSL.

I rang up slingshot again yesterday and the tech guy got me to do some tests and what not and the problem seems to have been somewhat sorted overnight...but it's still slower than its supposed to be. I just tried downloading an attachment from my email and that went at 45kb/s , that's still way short of the 200+ I normally get

nzdsl now reports

Download Speed: 1261 kbps (157.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 104 kbps (13 KB/sec transfer rate)

speedtest.net says

The only time I ever got those speeds was when I was living in the city (akl) I'm in mt. wellington now and I've never reached those d/l speeds ever since I moved here

I'm just waiting for an email from them to hear what's happening

Edit: Unlocker... where can I check the throttle on the visibill page? All it shows is my data usage and bill payments. I just double checked with the plans slingshot's website and I am on a 2MB plan

As per your recent speed test results it doesn't seem that your speed has been throttled, in Visibill, where you go to check your data usage there next to total data used it shows the plan you are on.

Sorry for the delayed response (just came back from a w/end away)

UPDATE:

My internet is still going at half the speed it's supposed to be and I just rang up Slingshot and the tech guy told me that I had to wait a few more days while they run tests so I have to bare with the crappy speeds until they can get to fixing it.

Now I've got another semi related question... Since I have to wait for them to sort out what the problem is (they said could be up to a week), do I have a right to ask them to carry over my unused data usage from this month? I'm asking this because I haven't even used up half of it as yet and my bandwidth resets on the 14th of every month (which is tomorrow).
