Hi

I have just gotten myself setup with Compass wireless and its all good except that the my Wireless router needs to be rebooted every hour or so. Basically it just looses connectivity and any attached devices cannot browse  anywhere - the internet connection is lost.  Rebooting the wireless router resolves it.  When I get this situation I still have a   wireless connection to Compass - the VOIP phone still goes fine.

My wireless was connection was installed a couple of days ago and they reused my own wireless router - a Linksys WRT54G  router.   It was setup with a PPPoE Internet connection type and all, worked ok for an hour or so.. basically started getting issues about an hour or so after the installer left.

In hindsight, perhaps I should have gone with their router.. just called compass and, they suggest that the issue  is likely to be my  router.... but it has never had any issues previously .
Been looking around .. and seen some things related to MTU settings - just wondering of there is anything that I could be looking to change here.
Compass has also suggested that I could setup a PPPoE connection on a machine and put their feed into that... to see if it is the wireless router that is an issue here - I guess it makes sense to do this but, in some ways it doesn't really resolve  the issue if it is related to the router.  My feeling is that there must be something wrong in the configuration somewhere.

Have attached the basic settings from the wireless router.

Aside from this, I am in danger of giving Compass some positive feedback, because the whole process was pretty good, and when its going, the broadband is very good.

The settings you have posted look OK but it would be a good idea if you also posted the WAN settings (PPPoE etc) so we can check those.  I used a Linksys WRTP54G for many years with a similar wireless service and it never went offline by itself; only if there was some upstream issue causing it.  It is sitting in my shed doing nothing now if you want it.

What Compass have suggested regarding PPPoE on your PC is a good idea as it will prove whether there is some other issue at play here.

Hi

Thanks for the offer. I will set up a machine to directly take the wireless connection - will see it staus ok overnight to try and conform if it is the router that is the issue. When the problem occurs, its not just the devices connected wirelessly, but also the desktop machine that is connected from one of the ports on the wireless router.

Sorry - I don't understand exactly what you mean re WAN settings. Is it these?

What revision of the WRT54G have you got? You can find out from the bottom (eg WRT54G v4) - you might be best to install some 3rd party firmware on it.

Those are the WLAN settings i.e. Wireless LAN.  The page I was referring to contains the PPPoE settings and other stuff to do with your Compass Wireless connection (WAN = Wide Area Network).  There should be a port on your router labelled as such, or maybe it's simply called "Internet".

OK, fair enough.  I was just wanting to confirm that your WAN IP address is dynamically allocated by your ISP, along with DNS servers etc.  If you have static IP addresses in those fields it can lead to problems.  Just make sure that's the case, and if so, there's nothing else to do except connect your PC via PPPoE and see what happens over several days.

Hi Peter,

Let me know if you have no luck improving your setup and I will get one of out Wireless team to give you a call.

Since your Compass VoIP line still works when your internet stops it looks to me like it is not a Wimax issue as the VoIP sits on a different VLAN/Air Interface and would also go down if the Wimax CPE or Network had an issue.

Let me know.

Cheers
Peter @ Compass

It can run the Micro version of DD-WRT, well worth flashing it to increase stability. Follow the instructions Here to give this the flashing treatment, make sure you have screenshots of your configuration for the PPPoE part and have a way to access the internet without your router if you need to refer to online guides for more information (via 3G on your phone will work) - when you change the firmware on your router it will reset it completely.

Warning: you can not revert your router to it's old firmware if you do this, but trust me, it's well worth it.

Failing this, you might want to go shopping for a new router. Personally I'd go for the TP-LINK TD-W8960N since it's cheap and a good all-round performer, and can run custom firmware images.
