So I rang telecom to check what kind of speeds I would be getting on VDSL.
According to the chorus tool it says I will be getting speeds of 24mbps down , 11.1 mbps up .

I thought that was a bit strange, so I called up snap and asked them to run a prequal, same answer.
Neither telecom or snap could give me an explanation, but the rep at Snap did say it was weird.

My downstream attenuation is reporting 6 on my modem, however on their systems it says 2.

I have a master spliter which is VDSL2 compatible, 300 - 400metres from the local cabinet aswell.

Anyone have any ideas ?

Thats about what I get at 6-700m from the cabinet (23 down, 10.something up) . Something is clearly not good if you are only seeing that at 300m

Hang on, I have just re read that, do you _have_ vdsl and are seeing those speeds, or is that just what chorus are estimating?

Telecom and snap said thats the speeds i will be expecting on my line using their chorus tool.

Are you on Snap or Telecom? Telecom don't own the lines anymore so if you're with Snap I don't know why you'd be ringing Telecom.

If you're with Telecom feel free to flick me a private message with your landline number / address, else just flick me your address and I can check it out on the maps. Sounds to me that your master filter might be installed incorrectly, if there is any interference on your line it can cause massive speed-drops on VDSL.

Thiere is only one way to do a prequal so the results should be the same from both. If they differed I'd be really worried.

Netmap data does tend to be under real world results for VDSL2 downstream figures if you're close to a cabinet since DSM will optimise the profile.

The prequal estimates always seem to be extremely conservative. Mine came back around 20 I think but I get 36-37 on default Target SNRM - I've heard of other people getting similar estimates but once connected much better speeds. The 11.1 up is a bit odd but I'd think you'll see ~40+ down with that attenuation on ADSL if you do move to VDSL.

Hi, poorly in incorrectly installed master filters do happen, normally by incompetent practitioners, recently I was asked by Telecom to investigate a troubled VDSL install, I found the Chorus installer had incorrectly installed the filter, the result was 20Mb/s down and 10Mb/s up, after I corrected the install it went to 42Mb/s down and 10Mb/s up, and the customer no longer had to endure loud hissing on the phone.

The technicolour VDSL2 modem was reporting 12-13db of downstream attenuation both before and after correct filter installation. An incorrectly installed filter might not upset an ADSL2+ install, but would definitely show up on a VDSL2 situation.

In this case the OP has not gotten VDSL installed yet, was just looking at the prequal results of which are a huge underestimate normally. His line is pretty good.

I concur about the pre-qual results being conservative. I don't like giving them out to prospective customers as 9/10 times they are majorly underestimating the likely line speed.

It's actually impossible to get over 31mbps on that Chorus tool for downstream.

Chorus have said they are going to re-calibrate it "soon"
