Hi,

At the moment the nearest cabinet to my house is about 30m away on one of the two streets adjoining the property (we live on the corner). Our phone connection, however, goes to telephone pole on the other adjacent street, and clearly takes a circuitous route to the cabinet.

We're going to be doing some fairly extensive renovations, and I'd wondered about trying to get the phone connection redone as a more direct connection (& underground) to the nearby cabinet.

Has anyone else done this? Who should I talk to about it?

Lyndon

My parents had this done in their street. I think everyone in the street paid some of the cost. Details recollection is very vague sorry.

Unless there is a DP (grey pillar) on either corner of your boundary the cable will take more or less the same route.
To underground the cable you will be required to dig a trench to the current pole and lay 20mm conduit from the pole to where you want it to terminate on the house. From there Chorus will come and install the service lead by simply going underground out to the pole and then shooting up the pole and joining it to the current overhead lead.
So it won't shorten up the lead but will look much better and be more robust then those rubbish OH cables anyway. Also means when Fibre comes along you won't have to have that installed OH but rather in your new underground conduit.
In terms of re-wiring you can either ask Chorus to re-wire or get your Sparky/Data cabler to do it. I would go for the private option as the Chorus job might not be as tidy as they can't spend as much time as a private contractor.
