I want to upgrade my headset/landline combination. It is possible that I need to move to VOIP, but I'm not 100% sure about that because phone line quality is paramount (I am slightly hard of hearing and I use the phone for work). Also, I want to be able to use my headset/landline combination even if the PC is turned off.

What I was hoping to do was to by a quality duo (ie it must be on two ears, not one due to my hearing) headset such as the ones by Dr Dre or Turtle Beach and link them via bluetooth to a dect or similar phone (I konw some of these good headsets have buttons that allow you to answer mobile phone calls and I was hoping that would also work for the bluetooth landline handset).

I was thinking that a phone such as this http://www.uniden.co.nz/New_Zealand/p_xdect6145btu_1h_index.asp would be suitable. Ignore the Uniden headset. What I had hoped was possible was to use the Dr Dres instead of the mobile phone as a paired device. But Uniden tells me I can't do that.

Does anyone have any solutions? If it's VOIP can you please spell out the basics of how I can do this with my computer off and with not even 1% drop in line quality. I'm just a little vacant about how it would work.

Please feel free to ask me questions and I will endeavour to answer. I'm not a fully fledged geek, but I like technology. :)

As long as your internet connection is robust, you should be able to get VoIP calls AT LEAST as good as a traditional landline, and possibly better. You could even port your current number to a VoIP provider if you liked.

I have a Siemens S685 IP DECT phone. The base station plugs into my broadband router and is in no way tied to a PC. The handset has Bluetooth build in so you can pair it with any Bluetooth headset.

IP solutions with Bluetooth aren't all that common tho, so you may end up paying a bit of a price premium. Do you have a budget in mind?

I'm thinking Bluetooth headset because there is very little choice with DECT headsets. The trouble with going VOIP is having to change telephone provider. I don't really want to. I've also heard (but could be wrong) that it can be difficult to set up the VOIP connection. (Thanks for the tip re the router. I wasn't thinking of that option).
I want a really good headset soundwise.
Re budget. As little as possible. :) But realistically I'm looking at a few hundred dollars.

Certainly if you don't have any other reason to move to VoIP, other than wanting to use a Bluetooth headset, there are options to use your existing landline.

As far as I can tell, the product you have linked to will pair with your mobile phone to make/recieve calls, but you can't paid a headset to use for calling.

A little more expensive, but this product looks like it will do the trick, and no move to VoIP needed

I have the Panasonic KX-TG7652 DECT phone system. I really like it as it is the only cordless phone system I know of that has talking caller ID. It also allows you to connect your cellphone by bluetooth so any calls that arrive on your cellphone can be picked up on any household handset. You can also use any household hndset and make outgoing calls on your cellphone. It also supports a bluetooth headset, which I have never tried out, but if you are in Auckland and want to test your bluetooth headset out to see if it is compatible with this cordless phone system, then PM me. I am in Parnell.

Thanks TwoSeven. My problems is that the Uniden headset doesn't solve my problem. I wanted to use a third-party headset with the unit, but Uniden told me directly on the phone that it wouldn't work. I went to Noel Leeming yesterday and the salesman assured me that I could use a third party headset with the Panasonic phone. So I'm really looking to do that. I just have to decide which headset. I need one with really good noise cancelling powers and possibly with a volume boost of some sort.

Apologies, I missed the bit in your original post about requiring a headset that covers both ears. For this from memory you might require a phone unit that supports the 'Bluetooth Headset Profile' (you might see it as documented as HSP) or a later variant thereof which is how headsets connect.

I don't believe as you have mentioned that the Uniden supports this - but I cant find any documentation other than it supports the Bluetooth 2.1 Handsfree profile (HFP), however, the question has given me something to experiment with :)

Thanks TwoSeven. I didn't fully understand what the Uniden people said, but your comment about the Bluetooth 2.1 Handsfree profile is the answer.
I'm convinced that the Panasonic unit does it. I now just need to start thinking about headphones. The Noel Leeming guy reckoned I could get away with the cheap ones. But considering the fact I'm buying the whole setup because I have trouble hearing calls for work (in my home office). I think I need really good noise cancelling earphones. My hearing is not that bad, but I need to be able to really concentrate while on the phone, so covering both ears is essential. I often find as well that if the other person is on a headset we both have trouble hearing each other. So some sort of boost would be good.

Just for the record I went into Noel Leeming and they confirmed that this unit will do what I want. That's great.
I then spoke to Turtle Beach and they won't guarantee that their headsets will work with the Panasonic unit. Noel Leeming says they're getting in a Skull Candy headset that will work with the Panasonic. Although this isn't my first choice of headset I'm sure it will be fine and somehow I believe there will be a value in buying both from Noel Leeming. That way if there is an incompatibility then Noel Leeming have to take both back. (I will of course get Noel Leeming to match the Good Guys price. :) )
