Hola,

My workplace is located in Auckland CBD. We're with Telecom ADSL but as we grow this is becoming a serious bottleneck. We used to get ~8mbit a couple of months ago but now we get around 2.8mbit down and 0.4 up. Most days we have can have anywhere up to 12 people sharing the connection which gets very painful - nobody is doing anything dramatically taxing either. We've put our SIP phones on a separate (dedicated) ADSL line and also have started splitting some users to a third ADSL connection.

As such, we're spending multiple hundreds a month between our three lines and connections + overage as Telecom won't sell us anything above 200GB. VDSL is apparently available in the area but our line is in such bad shape that once Chorus do the check we're rejected.

What other options do we have for Internet access in the CBD?

If your line is too bad for VDSL (all 3 of them, really?), then you either need to be in a fibre-capable area, or in range of one of the various wireless providers (which may well be $$$$$).

What about UFB? I had a UFB connection installed in the middle of the CBD the other day. If you want to PM me your address I can give you some alternatives.

Thanks

If you're rejected for VDSL and you've not got access to fibre then I'd start investigating where all your speed has gone - what's your attenuation?

12 users should be fine on a standard adsl connection.

you mention you go over 200gb per month that's quite a bit for a 12 person operation - any way you can add some traffic management policies?

Well, they all sync around the 4mbit mark and two of them are with ISPs that don't offer VDSL. Telecom's complex internet team told me many of our neighbours are syncing 3x higher than all of our connections so I'm guessing there's a terrible wiring situation somewhere on the line.

Then you need to get your wiring sorted. Get master filter installed, etc, if you don't already.

I'll hunt it down on Monday. All of our lines dropped in speed around the same time and getting Chorus to properly check it has been a real pain. They've fixed it on one of the Orcon ones but not the other two. Our data usage is really in line for what our business does - the overage charges aren't really a barrier.

All of our lines are single jackpoints run from the building demarc & no POTS phone (VoIP PBX). Would a master filter be useful in this situation?

Should probably mention we've had Chorus out twice, coming up three times next week and every time they've "solved" the issue...

There are other alternatives other than Bitstream 4 UFB which may be a little more expensive than a VDSL connection.

It depends exactly where you are located.

I would contact business focused ISP's like Unleash, DTS, ICONZ, Maxnet/Vocus and Voyager who should be able to offer you quotes for non UFB/GPON fibre options (Vector, Telstraclear, Telecom non UFB fibre is prevalent in the CDB).

You will be able to get fibre almost guaranteed in the CBD (unless your landlord is an a55hole). You can get P2p business fibre for as low as $500 a month I hear with things like unlimited national data caps. Try a business focussed ISP also

Contact Unleash to see what they're able to do, I'm sure they'll be able to organise a cost-effective solution for you. They can do UFB also when the time comes and I'm sure they'll have no issues moving you over :)

"unless your landlord is an a55hole" - You might find there is something in the telecommunications act regarding this...
