Media player seems to think it needs Windows Live ID.

That's a 30MB download.

People keep asking me why we even need UFB.

Well here's another reason...

On DSL this would take some time to download.  As I'll be charging this client today, they don't want to be paying me to sit about for an hour while I wait for a download.

If they have to pay for me to wait, it will cause the cost to be to high for them.  The result will be that I just don't get the job because it becomes to expensive.

Hence we need the UFB to lower the cost of getting the stuff needed to do the job so we get the small gigs that keep the small guys in business and paying tax to fund the UFB roundabout.

30 - 40 seconds, even on ADSL1? :P

Maybe if it was a 2-3 gb steam update.. then I could understand.

Or at a stretch the 600mb upgrade for IOS devices. But that's what they created iTunes for to download it once in the background and update all your iDevices in one hit locally.

Also just because you have UFB doesn't mean your downloads are going to be any quicker if they're not cached locally.

The speed is what the speed is, surely you factor that kind of overhead (as little as it actually is in reality) into your pricing model....that's what everyone else does?

If you client's connection is taking an hour to haul down 30MB, then they have bigger problems than paying you to wait for this download for a DLNA Server to  complete.

Getting their 80kb/s connection seen to might be a good start

Oh, sure, I was just poking fun at using a 30MB download as an example ;)

You're right.

The post really was just about the abstract thought that I had while I was doing the job.

Folk are right that 30mb will come done reasonable fast on dsl if no one is doing anything else etc, but those guys just missed the point.

This site has 60mbit hitting it, so it means that stuff happens fast and can be done fast.

We need UFB because it means we can do stuff faster for clients on their sites, which means that we can deliver more value quickly and as a result give the customer a good experience of our service.
