So my Orcon account is due for renewal on 23rd September and I'm looking for better options.

I want to stick with a vanilla phone line due to alarm etc which restricts the Orcon plans, plus fibre isn't an option for me.

Current plan is 5GB a month with phone line plus a bonus of 1TB of data to use over a year at $81 a month. Overages out to around 88GB data a month.

Orcon have offered to renew me on the same plan as long as I take out a 12 month contract. They can't currently offer VDSL but it is in the pipeline and I can upgrade later. Sadly they can't confirm upgrade costs, and termination costs $199 on their 12 month contract.

If I don't renew I'm stuck on a 5GB a month deal with $2 GB overage charge which is crazy. Also I'm less than impressed with Orcon's support over the last 2 months. I've been trying to get some feedback on plan options from them and in the end I had to spend about 2 hours on the phone yesterday before I made any progress.

Telecom offered me VDSL plus phone line and 80GB data for $95 or 150GB for $109, on a 12 month contract with $299 termination costs.

Personally the Telecom deal sounds good. Cancelling with Orcon will cost me an extra months rental as I'm too close to my account renewal date.

I'm open to other options, otherwise I'm leaning towards the Telecom deal due to VDSL

Any other suggestions?

For what it is worth - I am a happy Telecom customer - their helpdesk has been good the lat couple of times I have needed something.

VDSL is nice too. The additional upload is orsm (I am quite far from cabinet so only get 22 down, but that is nice too).

Argh

My plan expires on the 22nd of September, and I don't want to live on the 5GB plan for a month until you announce your plans.

What decision did you make?

I'm having major performance issues (yet again) with Orcon, I am just so fed up with complaining to them and not really getting a reliable solution.

A short time ago, Speedtest indicated 0.81 Mb/s download, 0.71 Mb/s upload.

Surely you can just do nothing and carry on with the current plan? If your ISP is forcing you to resign a contract just to stick with the current plan, leave them
Telecom VDSL looks to be a good option for you, if you want slightly more data then Snap do phoneline & 100GB for $95. However you would be up for a slightly higher setup fee I think (Telecom have the free modem offer)

I switched from Orcon to Telecom about two years ago. No regret.

Currently on VDSL2 with Telecom, it is very stable. As a new customer to telecom you can get free install with a 12 month contract. I have to pay $99 with a 12 month contract because I was an existing customer.

Telecom has released a 30GB plan for $85 too.

It comes down to personal preference, Telecom have quite a large international bandwidth pool so you see a constant speed. Reading some other threads on Geekzone I have come to a conclusion that Orcon has quite a few international bandwidth problems. It's simple really, if you're happy with them then stay, but for me having my mobile + broadband / landline combined on the same bill just makes sense to me.

On another note, Telecom's 3G network is pretty awesome for the likes of Ingress due to the fact in most places I've noticed it does have better rural coverage, at my parents place there's no coverage from team red or team giant logo but full 3G coverage with team blue, again this depends where you are and comes down to personal preference but if you're happy with how it performs then why switch?

VDSL is pretty awesome too :)

Just my 2c.

I know this reply is neither telecom or orcon but ....

flip has phone and unlimited for $85 a month

No contract needed so nice and easy to try out.
Why have a data cap when you pay around that price anyway?

Perhaps look into Snap? $95 for 100GB VDSL + POTS. Along with free off peak if you also get a data pack.
