I have had fibre installed last week and the ONT seems to have 2 pots and 4 ge ports logging into the ONT by normal or user or super user has different settings including being able to setup PPPoE but for some reason this does not connect to the ISP with my username / password .
Without this I am unable to setup the 2 VOIP ports which to me is fairly darn useless and I need to have another SIP box for this purpose I want to eliminate all this extra stuff that should not be needed.
I dont mind using an extra router as I have one with a 2TB hard drive build in although it can also operate as access point as well leaving another router as the DHCP.
The HG8240 does have DHCP and it is enabled.
Everything is there to do what I want - have the HG8240 log onto my ISP have 4 GE ports for PC smart TV mac and WD NET 900 as well as 2 VOIP phone lines, googling around this has been done in other countries / other ISPs.

The ONT is not a end-user customisable device. It's owned and managed by the LFC or Local Fibre Company (Chorus, Enable, UFF or Northpower).

You won't be able to use the ATAs, or any other Ethernet port other than what the RSP or Retail Service Provider (Telecom, Snap et al) purchase service from the LFC. It's not a switch / hub ports on the ONT, they are all separately managed and provisioned ports from the LFCs.

So you can't go around messing with the config on them, since it won't work.

The RGW (Residential Gateway) aka the RSP provided router which plugs into the ONT, is the box with the switch that gives you 4 LAN ports.

The ONT is the box with a Fibre connection on one side and an Ethernet port & ATA ports on the other.

They are owned & installed by the LFCs and are non-end user customisable.

And if you do mess around with it I suspect the LFC may get a little grumpy with you.
