anyone know if VDSL cabinets have a UPS?

Contractors have been digging up the street outside my apartment for months, yesterday Saturday they were mucking around with power first thing in the morning

then about 1020PM at night my SNAP VDSL connection stopped working for a few mins, then it did a resynch and suddenly jumped from 38/9 to 52/10Mb and worked for about another 2 mins then stopped/failed completely

1120PM I logged a call with SNAP, who said other users connected to the cabinet (which I can see about 30m from my window) also disconnected

then about 1220AM this morning a Chorus contractor comes to look at the Cabinet, mucks around till about 2AM then goes home

Today about midday Vector/North Power guys turn up and basically run a long power line strung up along the side of a building for about 50m into the back of the cabinet

Any ideas why the cabinet would fail so many hours after the power guys went home, do they have a UPS/battery backup that would last for hours?

Yes they do, on average they last about 2 hours on battery but this depends on the cabinet and how many customers it serves. If you're connected straight to the exchange these have both battery and generator backups.

On a windy night in Wellington the power behind our street got knocked out, our broadband went down but came up about an hour later, Chorus had gone up to our cabinet and plugged a generator in it. They're normally quite quick with the generators if it's going to be an extended outage.

interesting thanks, there's no way a generator was in there, its just a standard green cabinet at the side of the road. Will post a photo later of the cabinet, with a long power cable plugged into it strung down the side of the building

SNAP help desk guys were great, they basically told me to expect it be out for at least 12 hours

Full marks to Chorus, who sub contract in Trans Works (? if I read the sign of the side of his car properly) who turned up 2 hours after the outage started (and worked on it from 12-2AM in the morning)

so all up VDSL was out for 13 hours (sucks when you rely on Hulu/Netflix for your entertainment)

The cabinets have batteries inside them with an external connector (with a cover over it) for plugging in a generator. There is also a metal loop welded to the base so the generator can be chained to the cabinet to prevent it from walking away.

Funnily enough, the "missing" generators "turned up" in Aranui & Linwood. :)
