Ok, so looking at business UFB data plans and obviously used Google to see what's out there. The best I've found so far is with HD, it's 1TB of data for $240 p/m inc gst. Anyone know of a better UFB business plan that can be used in Napier?

I don't know much about anything but I'll give it a go.

I'm unsure if they have a handover in Napier, but we use Snap in Auckland for our office. They've been awesome, probably not as cheap as HD, but do a search around geekzone for experiences with hosting direct (HD).

You really need to define "business". That could both bitstream 2 or a bitstream 3 plan, both of which will have significantly different prices as there are a number of different products.

You can't really compare apples with apples when you're actually looking at an apple and a pear.

I'd recommend not going for the cheapest option but a well established and trusted ISP. If you lost connectivity at your business for a day how much would it cost you? The difference between some cheap providers and higher quality providers will (may :) ) quickly look insignificant then.
How much traffic do you think you'll use, and from/to where?

If you're after some seriously good business broadband check out dts.co.nz. They probably come in pretty high in the price range, but don't think you'll beat them for speed & service. They give you a CIR which is cool if you have time critical transactions, (voice, video, etc)

The HD and Orcon's of the world give you these massive plans but you may only need 20GB of international and the rest might be national (most big traffic seems to be cached in NZ these days).

Snap have a good national presence but no published CIRs. You'll find you don't go through much 'metered' traffic on Snap either especially if you buy the Unmetered Youtube/Google add-on.

I mention Snap's national presence (and DTS) because I get the feeling if HDs datacentre was compromised in a disaster they wouldn't be routing packets anywhere, whereas the bigger guys *should* be fine.

EDIT: Disclosure, I haven't personally used DTS but was going to switch a business over earlier in the year until we found out we were moving into a new building.
There we have 2x gigabit dedicated/dark fibers through Snap (via Enable from one street and Chorus coming in from the other side, one fiber goes back to central exchange and one goes direct to Snap's office) - obviously we decided we couldn't afford the internet to go down (and have the benefit of a few other like minded businesses to share some of the cost).

EDIT 2: I see HD do have a POP in Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland and Sydney, but still wouldn't go there even for my home connection after a bad experience.

I would stay away from HD..

The reality is you get what you pay for.

I would suggest a business focused ISP like Unleash or DTS although they may not have handovers in your area. Look at local ISPs also as you may find their service is better. No matter what you do I would suggest a VDSL2 connection with another ISP to be your disaster recovery.

And just because we are big I wouldn't dismiss Telecom either with consistently excellent speeds.

Ok thanks guys. Plenty of food for thought there. One question though, has anyone actually had a bad experience with HD or is the general dislike of that company due to the arguments they've had on this website? I can see they're not very popular here but there doesn't appear to be much info on their actual ISP service.

I don't know much about anything but I'll give it a go.

I can say first hand I've experienced the practices of that company including what I would consider theft. When it comes to ego, the boss is the Kanye equivalent of the internet industry.

Yes had poor experience with home DSL a couple of years ago. Put up prices immediately after sign up and then internet was barely usable for a few days while they were suffering a DoS attack. Or hadn't paid their bills or something. Stay clear especially for business.
Ego nearly as big as that Seeby guy from Voyager (except Voyager would have better service)

At least one DOS attack I heard of was retaliatory. Changed data centres a few times, and not because everyone was so sensible or professional. Difficult to solve problems objectively when there is an ego blocking the way. Apparently he does have people now that get stuff sorted though. The business model over there is minimal service to match the price, a bit like 2talk does with VoIP.

Time to find a new industry!
