This is just out of curiosity really as I don't expect it would be supported, but would it be theoretically possible to run UFB fibre directly into a device with fibre support, such as this one? http://www.gowifi.co.nz/coming-soon-new-products/mikrotik-rb2011uas-2hnd-in-802.11n-wireless-router-with-sfp-port.html?keyword=RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN

I believe it is referred to (by Ultrafast at least) as a Fibre Demarcation Interface and is only available with the higher tiered fibre plans at a wholesale level. That is all I have come across in my travels though. Chorusvan might be able to shed some light (mind the bad pun) on Chorus' answer to this.

No.. The hardware is supplied and owned by ~~Chorus~~ the LFC.

You will never be able to use your own hardware as it is provisioned and managed by ~~Chorus~~ the LFC.

So you will always have a LFC supplied ONT of some type or another.

Edit: My bad, I should have really said "the LFC" when I said Chorus....

So you will always have a LFC supplied ONT of some type or another.

This is not strictly true.

1) Hardware is owned/supplied by the LFC, in many cases that is Chorus, but in others that could be UFF, Enable or Northpower.

2) Nothing stopping an ISP putting together a product that uses the UFB network of fibre but placing their own hardware at either end. We do this when linking locations in our core network and are likely to take this approach to connect clients at gigabit (or more) speeds next year.

This is an entirely different scenario - you're not linking your customers using GPON so can use any gear you want if you're merely using a dark fibre service or HSNS with no Chorus supplied media converter.

The simple answer to the question is no. In a GPON environment the ONT works very closely with with the OLU and there is no real guaranteed interoperability between GPON vendors.

For Enable and UFF you will always have LFC ONT for BS2, BS3 and BS3a products. BS4 will always have LFC ONU.
