Is there one or two places (Twitter, Facebook, TXT, etc etc) where we can go if we suspect that the internet has gone down?

ISP connection failures can usually be spotted by looking at the modem lights, but what if local and/or international links fail?

I'm sorry but the title of your post just demands the response, GHOST BUSTERS!

Seriously though your ISP is still your first port of call with regards to this.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

Tee hee hee.

Sadly, during an outage it is often difficult to get the ISP on the telephone, or have them admit just if and/or where a fault lies.

What I was looking for was a sort of centralised spot where users themselves are saying if they are connecting or not.

If your connection is down, how are you going to get to said site? ...

3g won't help if the OP's hypothetical scenario plays out :P

Really what you're asking for is a simple check list to prove your internet connection is working correctly.

Is there one on your ISP's support page?

Yes, I have used 3G to establish extent of outage (local, ISP etc), but I'm looking for somewhere to confirm that it's either just localised, or further widespread.

Perhaps I shouldn't have said that the entire net has gone down, but that I can't connect "at this particular point in time ... is anyone else having trouble?".

We often get such questions about outages here on GZ, but many times some hours or even days later before people confirm their status.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

If you are looking to check particular sites there is always the hardy

http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/

or if you are having widespread issues and suspect something like an SX failure you could always do a trace route and see where things go into a black hole

If there's an SX failure you'll probably know without needing to do a traceroute. Geekzone will be in outrage! :-)

Someone should establish some kind of online forum where geeks can rage about tech problems and internet outages... oh wait

My rules for outages: applies to power and internet outages.

1. confirm service doesnt work.  - are the lights on router all normal?  if so can you get to nzherald.co.nz etc
2 WAIT 30 minutes for it to come back
3. if its still not up then use alternative device or someone elses internet to check providers webpage / facebook page for an explanation and ETA.

This works for me pretty much everytime. :)

If you just cant get to facebook or youtube - this could be just the one site or more likely some malware on your PC...
