Hi guys,

This is my first post in this thread, so I'm new here :)

Long story short. I've been with Telecom before and in peak time the speed decreasing much but the overall was okay. recently I've got Flip because of their no contract rule. however I have a bigger issue with it. the latency to overseas is not good at all. for example get disconnected on RDP and SSH, and real time like Ajax websites are not very good on it.

I've tried all the different solutions and no difference. apparently the issue shouldn't be my side
because I've tried in my friend's house with their Flip connection and had same issue.

He's doing fine with it, as with just browsing the net it looks fine

So I'd like to move to a new provider but was wonder what you guys have?
and one more thing VDSL because of the flat wiring is not an option :/

I was thinking of Snap, Vodafone or Voyager

What do you recommend?

Telecom would have been a much much better network than Flip I would suggest.

If you want VDSL I would say either Telecom or Snap.

Have a look at the monthly Truenet results and you will see that Telecom and Snap regularly perform in the top 3.

if you are in the location where you can receive slingshots "better network" i would recommend them. i have a friend in central welly getting 13.8mbps actual download speed and 2mbps upload. personally im a bit further out and get 3.8mbps down 1.5mbps up. its pretty good considering unlimited usage

Thanks, but because of my location can't get VDSL, yes agree Telecom better than Flip, but still not the best

Slingshots, not sure about them, but a friend also recommended them too

Flip is on the Callplus network. So is Slingshot so the same issue may occur.

The biggest problem with Slingshot is they will try to get you on to the 'better network' which in a lot of cases is worse. The better network only has equipment in th exchanges and not out in the cabinets meaning most people are worse off on the better network than they would be on a Chorus wholesale connection.

And as long as you are within 1km of an exchange or cabinet VDSL is fine. Your internal wiring isn't an issue as Chorus require tech's to install a new cable and splitter on every VDSL install.

It shouldn't be the case that being on the "Better Network" is worse vs. the Vodafone UCLL / Telstra UCLL / Chorus Wholesale as at the end of they day you use the same copper what ever you are on.
If there is a cabinet available it would be stupid not to be on Wholesale. If there is good copper in the area a Vodafone Huawei DSLAM can get better sync rates over distance vs the Alcatel that chorus Wholesale (Correct me if im wrong Chorusvan) I couldn't comment on other ISP's gear. The good thing about Slingshot is if you live close to the exchange and you want to sacrifice that small amount of download you can get ANNEX M. Giving about 2Mbp/s upload. (Makes the difference)

Really it comes down to what suits your need and whats available. Best to explore all options before getting it connected as you maybe locked in for 12 months on something that could of been better.

What kind of latency are you getting? Can you post some traceroutes and/or smokeping graphs to the places you're sshing/etc to?

That is all true. However, it is only true if there isn't a cabinet closer to the customer. As far as I know, no one has collocated in the Whisper cabinets yet so when there is a cabinet closer to the customer than the exchange the Chorus wholesale connection will always win.
I have met countless people who have been moved to UCLL connections instead of being on Chorus wholesale connection who would be far better off being on the Chorus ISAM's.

I'm trying to avoid oversell networks, as they are overselling or customers abusing the network. so it couldn't be the best quality

The traceroute is fine. it just the network somehow implemented to kill the connection after a while idle! something like that

Okay, I'm not looking for best price, price isn't really an issue here. I'm looking for quality.
And problem with providers that offering unlimited or no data cap is. they are overselling. I mean come on the price for bandwidth in NZ it couldn't be that cheap. and usually there always some customers on them that abusing the network. so that's off the table too.
I don't need much data allowance even 30GB should be fine for me

and last thing even something like my 3G on my 2Degrees phone would be great. if they were offering better data plans with cheaper price I would definitely go with them, because it works fine for me.

Check out the CityLink website. It's more of a commercial option than residential, there are a lot of government departments and big businesses on it. You could get a connection to them, then you'd have to route your traffic to an ISP to get international connectivity. Could be very very expensive. It's probably the best in the CBD, but impractical unless your building is already wired, even then, expensive.

They do the CBD Free Wifi. If you can connect to that they may have a paid offering.
