Hi

I recently moved into a new rental and ordered internet and a home phone line. If I plug the phone into any of 3 phone jacks in the place, I get no dial-tone. However, the internet works fine when I plug in a vodafone modem. If I plug the phone into the modem, I then get a dial tone, but can't make or receive calls (I get no such number sound). If I call my new landline number with a cell, it rings normally (for the cell) even though I might have the home phone off the hook or not even plugged in. Can anyone make any sense of this? I called Vodafone, and they were stumped too, as everything looked ok on their end. The phone itself seems to be ok, as I it gets dial tone on the modem. The only other thing I can think of is that the house has an alarm which I've noticed has a dialer. It's off, but could that be the problem?
