Hi There!

I am wondering what sort of ping times you guys are getting via speedtest etc for pings? We are seeing 20+ms

Depends on:

1) Your location
2) Your provider
3) The speedtest server you are testing on

Can you be more specific?

2 - 3 ms (tauranga)

11 - 13 ms (vodafone - auckland)

Locn = Porirua. 30/10 with Orcon. Using Speedtest.

Fastest ping is 20mS to Ak (Orcon)

Other NZ pings 27-36.

I can't believe you have to ask. MSK-IX of course. Where else would you test to but the Moscow Internet Exchange? Over ipv6 of course, since it wont reply via ipv4.

I get 382ms on Snap VDSL. What about you guys?

Sorry I should have been a little clearer. I want to know what ping times people are seeing to local NZ Sites, like their ISP's DNS Servers, Trademe, other popular NZ sites?

It still depends WHERE the two endpoints are that you are speaking of.

There is an appreciable difference between latency AKL-Akl and CH-Akl. Depending on your ISP their DNS server might be 4ms away, or 20ms away. You aren't asking a good enough question.

Now, if your question was something like

"What sort of average ICMP echo time are people seeing when they ping a server in the same metropolitan area (eg. Auckland to Auckland) and that server isn't ICMP filtered or throttled?"

Then the answer would generally be 3-5ms.

If it was Chch-Auckland, it might be 18-22ms RTT.

Now, on Some ISPs you just can't tell how far away individual servers are, either because there are essentially invisible hops of an MPLS network, or because the server you assume might be close could be in another city for any number of good reasons.

UFB Auckland Vodafone.

Speedtest Vodafone 4ms - Orcon speedtest 3ms
Trademe 8ms
AU 28ms
USA West 118-128ms
