Hi all, I've requested a VDSL connection with Telecom, Technicians are programmed to come next week.

The current setup has xDSL master filter shoved into wall cavity behind flush mounted PDL outlet (2x BT {one data and one phone}, 2x RJ-45{networking off to rest of house})

We aren't really wanting more holes in walls or unsightly external boxes etc.

There is access via basement underfloor to the wiring.

My questions are: should I purchase a RJ-45 insert for the PDL 600 series faceplate or would chorus be expected to carry such?

What sort of workmanship should I expect, external jackpoints slapped on wall, or a tidy concealed job?

I won't be onsite during install, so hope to get some feedback on how pushy I need to be to get a satisfactory outcome.

Chorus minimum standards / requirements for a VDSL install are

900m max from the cabinet. Obviously you are.
A master splitter installed at the ETP outside the house where the service lead meets the internal wiring
And if there isn't any existing cat5e or better a new piece must be run from the ETP to a dedicated RJ45 jack point.

OK as far as workmanship goes you should of course get a nice tidy job. Just the same as if you let any other tradesman in to do some work.

Chorus techs (I am one) carry standard RJ45 keystones. I'm not sure if these fit into the PDL 600 faceplates but I think they do.

We don't carry anything flash like silver faceplates etc. worst case is you'll get an external RJ45 box. In my opinion these are ugly. I don't do much VDSL, it's not my area but when I do I try to use a nice flush mount box and faceplate.

I think it's going to depend on the tech in your area, which service partner they are with and the gear they have on board on the day.

If you wanted something in particular personally I'd supply it myself.

If you want anything more than the minimum standards outlined above extra hard wired jack points etc you'd need to speak with your provider first. There may or may not be a charge.

Thank you, yes that answers a lot of questions. The fact that the filter goes into the external etp makes a difference to the current setup. They will have to run an additional cable from etp to the master jack as there's only one cable currently. I'm thinking the rj-45 keystone will fit after googling it.

As far as I know (like I say it's not my area) if they do have to run a new length of cable they will use the new hybrid fibre copper cables. This has 4 pairs of twisted copper just like normal cat cable but also has two fibres. If you ever want to move to fibre the cable is already in.

This of course only applies if the existing wiring can't be used or doesn't meet the minimum standards.

Here is my ETP to prove it :-) See the 4 pairs. Unsure of supplier but yes I think the usual Rocpac. Like I say first time I have seen it so it must be new.

That's very cool, must be the latest drums in. You don't know what the rating is by any-chance? Cat5 or 6? Looking at it, I would say 5 though.....

I was wondering the same at the weekend. I'd say for it to be the new minimum standard it would have to be 6. Cat 5 and 5e has also been discontinued at Rocpac with cat 6 being supplied now.

The twists just don't look tight enough for 6, just looks like 5 to me.....if you find out would you let us know, i'll ask around tomorrow and post if I get some info too.

FYI @ Overkill the supplier is NOT Rocpac. I'm unsure where it is being sourced from but I have been told it's not Rocpac. The rating of the copper pairs is Cat5e.
