Chorus has advised that our area of Paraparaumu/Kapiti is lucky enough to have fibre available as of last week. Absolutely gutted that there are no ISP's that provide a link to the Pram exchange for the connection to the Chorus fibre......this really is a "horse before the cart" scenario....

Would anyone out there from any of the ISP's have a time-frame or an estimate of time that there will be a "link" to connect the sunshine coast to a the amazing speeds of fibre? Fully hoping Snap will get in first, I know you can do it, I want your plans, here's my money!!!!!!!

oh dear that's worse than my scenario! (backdoor neighbour has fibre - we don't - and he uses internet to check his emails)

It's a shame for sure. I know Param is on the board for us, no dates as yet but you probably won't need to wait too much longer.

Excellent, thank you for the reply, I think the first ISP in will get most of the connections as I know of quite a few homes that are biting at the bit for a connection.

There's some regions that may never get any ISPs, due to them being just so unpopulated, the numbers simply wouldn't stack up. To my mind the cost to ISPs to service some areas vs the potential rewards should have been considered by CFH in the planning stages.

I have even dug a new trench (lucky it's sand) to a new POE, installed the Hybrid from my comms cabinet to the new POE, all ready for connection, now I'm all dressed up and no where to go......

I really was dumbfounded when I spoke to a great Telecom rep and he explained the situation (he only found out himself), he said exactly that, that there may be areas that would not get any service on fibre even though the cable has been laid in the ground.

At least one ISP will do it. It's inevitable no matter the population density.

I guess the problem with Kapiti is that we don't have our own regional ISP - e.g. EOL for Tauranga, Snap for Christchurch.

I'd put my money on Snap to be the first in (when that is, who knows), they seem to be leading in terms of UFB coverage

This is something that has been an ongoing discussion in the industry for quite some time.. And there is no "fallback" ISP.

IMHO one of the biggest failings of UFB is the lack of tail services, at least that allowed an ISP no matter how big of small to supply services without needing to rely on a 3rd party for backhaul.

I disagree. Forcing ISPs to order their own backhaul improves overall end-to-end delivery as they've got more control in the process.

For places like Kapiti, no doubt providers such as Kordia, FX Networks or even Snap! will add it to their "national backhaul" product that they've developed with UFB in mind.

Currently we are at 17 UFB areas, and we will have all UFB areas completed by mid this year.

Other sites we have under build stage at the moment are Whangarei, Whanganui, and Whakatane, no ETA on them at the moment but we will be announcing them live soon.

I think it was considered in round 2 of the planning after all the submissions agreed this would happen if LFCs were not able to provide layer 2 service. They didn't think of the obvious solution (a nationwide L2 wholesaler) so CFH allowed bids for both fibre and a monopoly on layer 2 service for the first few years. I suspect Telecom and Voda would try to get into all the areas and at least Telecom may be willing to wholesale to other ISPs they already have a relationship with.

BTW: the ONT and anything that lights up the fibre is Layer 2, basically the connection itself. Routers, internet and IP networks are Layer 3. The problem is that backhaul from the exchange to the ISPs is not included in the UFB part of it, so internet providers have to get connections in there before they can provide anything in each area.

Time to find a new industry!
