Im using a Mikrotik RB951-2n on Telecom UFB, I recently upgraded from 10/30 to 50/100. Problem is the pppoe connection along with the status byte/throughput counters just freezes when throughput goes over about 50mbits. Nothing else happens and the pppoe client eventually changes to show "disconnected" after about 30 seconds, then reconnects again without any problems.

Turned off ONT for 5min after upgrade and same problem, also rest mikrotik with a pin and re-configured again, however I haven't tried the telecom supplied router. I have vlan 10 enabled in the mikrotik, mtu/mru 1500. pppoe client mtu/mru 1492 and I have also tried 1360 and same problem.

Someone else is describing the same problem here, but did not post any useful information as to how they fixed it.

Does anyone have any ideas? I will plug in the Telecom supplied router tomorrow and test this again, if the same problem occurs i'll probably need to log a fault with them.

The RB951-2n might be a little slow for a 100/50 connection.

In the post I suggested a RB951G-2HnD not a RB951-2n. The RB951G-2HnD has over twice the throughput of the RB951-2n.

It seems most likely you are using 100% CPU on the RB951-2n running over 50M and thus has no resources to run the PPPoE Client on the router.

get a "bigger" Mikrotik

I presume you are running the latest firmware on the Mikrotik.

Also its very rare that a end user will have to reboot/restart the ONT.

I have an RB750GL, same size CPU but with 1Gbps switch chipset. When I transfer through it to a server runnong at 100Mbps I get full 100Mbps (about 80Mbps + tcp/ip and ethernet overheads) and the CPU clocks about 60%.

So that leaves around 40% CPU time for NAT, PPPoE and Wireless functions when transferring hard out.

I'd go for the 951-2HnD too, 600MHz CPU and a much more powerful Wi-Fi amplifer stage in it.

Which ROS version are you running? I'd try the latest v5 branch first (5.26).

I haven't been game enough to run 6 yet as 5 works fine for me. I had some PPPoE problems (but as a PPPoE server) in an earlier version of 5.

If you think the issue is a resource one log in to winbox, go to system and then profile.
That will show you stats on what services are using CPU power.

And are we talking throughput from lan to wan? Or just lan. If lan throughput I the issue perhaps you are using a bridge to connect the lan ports rather than slaving the extra interfaces to a master. That will use the switch chip rather than CPU.

PPPoE uses a lot of CPU especially with encryption. I haven't personally tried the same setup as you but in all honestly wouldn't be surprised if the CPU is choking once you go past 50Mbps.

My home router is a 2011LS-IN (although, I'm PPPoEing through VDSL rather than UFB).
My advice is avoid ROS 6.07->6.11.
6.13 should be okay. It fixes some PPP-related memory leaks.

To see if your router's CPU is choking (I don't think it will be), go into System -> Resources.

I'm guessing it must be PPPoE, as I use all routed ports via CPU without throughput probs.

The RB2011 series is a nice peice of kit.

You are exactly right, I started a few torrent with loads of peers. Went to system then resources, CPU went up as throughput increased, got to 93% CPU and the resource stats froze too, it appears the whole router is locking up when this happens. I had a look at the other more powerful Mikrotik on gowifi.co.nz and its cpu is 600mhz, my current Mikrotik is 400mhz, is 600mhz still enough?

Edit: Just noticed the router also reboots when this happens, I also don't have any problems maxing out over the lan ports.

What version of software/firmware are you running on the router? I run 6.12 (Software) /3.14 (Firmware) (at the moment with 0% problems) on my RB2011 and 6.13 is out now.

I wonder what sort of CPU the Telecom one has.

When it maxes out, are you using the wi-fi side of it or wired side of it? I wonder how much CPU the wi-fi side uses, vs nat vs connection tracking (under firewall), vs pppoe.

I wouldn't use encryption on PPPoE because if I'm not mistaken, the ONT uses encryption anyway since the upstream is using time division?

I have a more messy setup. I have a seperate Wi-Fi AP, and seperate router that does all the NAT'ing/Internet terminating. So each thing has its own horsepower with the MikroTik sitting between managing a few different external subnets.

I use the RB951G-2HnD firmware v3.08 with Chorus on the 200/50 test plan. It works great regardless of throughput, and I've also tested tagged and untagged, no problem with either. I am however having problems with the wireless signal, yet to get to the bottom of that.

Only other trouble I've ever had with it was random reboots when trying to use jumbo frames (excuse me if I'm using the wrong terminology, I'm a developer not a network engineer) - found out it's not supported :-)

Having just said its fine though, CPU does go to 100% if I do a speedtest that gets full speed......

There are lots of variables however. A 750/950 series product will work fine on that speed, but start loading the CPU and you'll strike problems.

Were you using PPPoE or DHCP? If PPPoE is it with or without encryption? PPPoE requires massive overheads and CPU as speeds get faster, hence it's pretty much a dumb idea when you start going above 100Mbps - 200Mbps

That's PPPoE with encryption. Sounds like the lucky Gigatown winners are going to need some help selecting hardware!

I'm eagerly awaiting the first post on GZ from a Gigatown person asking why they can only get 30Mbps over WiFi to speedtest.net
