Situation: My parents signed up to UFB at their house. The original copper line was overhead, and was removed when overhead fibre was installed. They have been with Orcon for both internet and phone since UFB was installed. Next month they will be going on a year long overseas holiday and will be renting out the house in the meantime. Because the copper phone line is long gone the tenants will only be able to get a VOIP phone service.

Are Telecom offering a residential VOIP phone service yet? And are there any other phone companies that cannot offer VOIP over UFB either? This is so my parents can tell the property manager to tell prospective tenants. Otherwise there will probably be a thread on here next month from someone complaining that they can't sign up with / transfer their phone account from their favourite phone company.

The house is in Auckland therefore it is on Chorus UFB if it makes any difference.

if the people they expect to rent their house are likely to be under 35, then they probably won't want a landline anyway, since it's likely they get plenty of minutes on their mobile.

I tend to agree, I deal with a very large amount of naked broadband customers everyday.

Telecom are the only provider who I have seen this far who have failed to provide a VOIP service other than those who do not provide a voice service at all.

Providing a SIP line is as others have proven a fairly easy task, Even the least competent providers seem to have done it yet, Telecom in particular are taking the extremely difficult route exclusively using the ONT which I have yet to see any other provider attempt to provide a connection in this method.

Not to say Telecom don't have legitimate technical issues causing this but at the end of the day it does alter their ability to provide the requested service to the customer.

Telecom have a huge incentive now to resolve this. They are paying the LFC for the UFB line and Chorus for the copper. Don't expect it to be like this for much longer.

On a related note (not worth making a new thread for it, anyway!), is a Telecom fibre install possible with an overhead line yet? I head something about hybrid fibre/copper cable a while ago but did that ever happen? My street is getting fibre soon and I still need to pick an ISP :)

Telecom's issue was their NEAX SIP linecard solution ended up collapsing in a heap forcing them to move to their Broadsoft solution for VoIP. This has meant significant delays.

Yes, Chorus has a hybrid solution. Not sure about the other LFC's.

For the benefit of those still to have fiber installed, you should decline to have your existing copper line removed when the fiber is being installed.

If it has to be removed because it is used as the "draw-string' to pull the fiber into the house then insist on the fibre being the copper/fiber hybrid variety so there is still (and always will be) a copper line to the house. There is nothing to be gained and everything to loose if you relinquish having a copper line into your home.

We had the copper/fiber line installed because we have a separate fax number and that would only work over copper.

Haha as much as I would want cut it all down I would imagine there would be many many issues if anyone saw you do it.

Overhead cabling just basically sucks big donkey d**k and I it's a terrible idea putting the UFB on poles. It annoys me when Trust power are like 'we are so fast because it's on poles'. They fail to mention that aesthetically it looks like cr4p.

I wonder if this is one of the core reasons why Telecom still doesn't have a handover with companies like UFF - no VOIP solution ready.

I think I read somewhere that the copper line is included (ie. free) with Chorus UFB service.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Can now tell my parents / the property manager - No Telecom, At least for landline phone. Guess the tenants could still use Telecom for internet. Hopefully they offer UFB internet without phone.

Chorus were going to do this for our neighbour until I pointed out that it went over my property.

"Too bad" they said, we're within our rights.

"Too bad" I said, you need my permission.

Which they didn't get.

Lots of arguing ensued.

Finally after lots of "we don't have to do this but to keep you happy we will" they did the right thing and undergrounded the fibre as they were supposed to.

I suspect their last action was to give me the impression that them doing things properly couldn't be extended to other similar situations.

So if they are trying to just replace your overhead line with fibre, tell them to put it in the ground. They are just saving (their) time and (their) money and creating an overhead network nightmare for the future. When the time comes to get rid of those posts, some bureaucrat will see that there are fibre lines going to them and that will be that.
