I may have missed this but I have a suggestion for a Sticky for all the terminology that is used in connecting ones property & computer to the internet. Whether this is dial-up, ADSL ADSL2, ADSL2+, VDSL, UFB etc. The abbreviations and corresponding names and explanations for all the distribution boxes, connection boxes (external/internal), street boxes, filters, cables, modems, routers etc.

I know there are some very knowledgeable and techie people in these forums but likewise there are allot of average "Joe/Jo Blow" who know nothing or are limited in their understanding and when we/they ask a question sometimes the terminology and abbreviations in the answer is not understood or are misunderstood.

An index of this terminology in a SINGLE POST would be great.

Cheers from the 'Home for the Bewildered'

JWR:
Here is a list...  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_computing_and_IT_abbreviations

Thank you.

But what about terms like, master filter, EFP, ONT, etc

The request is for more teleco related content than the IT specific terms referenced in that (admittedly pretty comprehensive) list provided.
Also I suspect a brief description is being asked for also, not just to know that ADSL means Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line etc.

At a beginner level, something along the lines of:
ADSL is your base broadband offering, (the next step up from the original squealy dial up), which allows for voice and data at the same time on a traditional copper phone line.
ADSL 2+ is the next step up from this but it's not available in all areas.
VDSL is a step up again, and the best you're going to get on standard copper phone lines, and again is not available in all areas either.
A Master Filter is just that, a filter that is installed right at the incoming phone line, which provides one output direct to your modem, and means all the existing phone outlets no longer require those silly plug in filters anymore.
An ONT (Optical Network Termination), is the device/bit on the end of the optical fibre coming into your home etc, etc

Google/wiki are really your friends though...

Thank you that is exactly what I meant. Having just returned to NZ after 30 years in Aus where UFB is only NOW just starting to be generally rolled out and ADSL2+ is the norm, all this new UFB technology and terminology is all new. So a Teleco to home internet related terminology would be great for everyone.
