Currently having a strange phone problem for a week or so -

When the phone line and adsl are both in the filter, only the adsl works and the phone line has the engaged/busy tone.

When the phone line is plugged directly into the wall socket the phone works (adsl modem now disconnected)

Phone and adsl both in the filter - the landline has a busy tone again.

Have tried two adsl filters and get the same issue..

A chorus tech came to visit a couple of months ago due to a similar issue with the wiring, but where both the adsl and the phone line stopped working intermittently due to a 'line is busy' type fault.  As far as I know he just cut the cable to the extension lead and did not put in a master filter, as the wall socket is still the standard BT type.

Any ideas would be appreciated, I know it's house wiring related but don't want to pay for another Chorus call out if can help it..

The modem or the modem cord is putting a dc load on the line. Try phone in filter. phone + modem cord and Phone + modem. Maybe modem with power on and off. I don't see it as a fixed wiring problem.

Thanks, I'll try that later.

If the fault is isolated to a DC load down the modem cable would that mean a faulty modem?   It's ~3yrs old vodafone huawei HG556a

Yeah I am thinking the same - modem faulty and possibly causing the line to be "picked up" when ever it is plugged in

Thanks for all your help, I would never have thought of that and would've ended up with another house wiring visit. It does seem like that is the problem - line is busy whenever the modem cable is connected.

Used it as an opportunity to upgrade to UFB - made the order with Telecom yesterday and a shiny new HG630b was delivered this morning. It can handle ADSL whilst waiting for the fibre install to happen..
