Speaking of speedtest.net - it appears that the 'Auckland' server has changed from NZDSL to World exchange. I've found that the 'results' differed from the previous incarnation, particularly when testing using mobile broadband (CDMA EVDO). But the again, the Napier one gives even more 'interesting' results.

Of course, speedtests like speedtest.net and its family are hardly scientific. Particularly when speedtest.net are trying to use it to gather your connection speed, while in many cases its not a true measurement but rather the speed between you and the test site would 'spike' the results.

However it was interesting nevertheless getting a rather large different between the nzdsl test (which appears to go through Orcons network and has issues of its own).

@AllNightNerding: I know this is boring advice, but the best thing you can do is contact your ISP and ask them for help. If they're good they should be able to provide you with some answers.

That being said, there's a few things you can do:

1) Reboot your router. Sounds dumb I know, but it will force it to reconnect.
2) See if you can log into your router and see what linespeed it's connecting at. Consistently low speeds tend to indicate some sort of problem with your line.
3) Ask around your neighbourhood, see if others are noticing the same thing. The exchange you're terminating through might just be overloaded.
4) Run a test really early in the morning - This will help to show you if your ISP's links are congested or not.

Use http://ip.northnet.net.nz/ for speed tests. No fancy screens, used by less people, and seems to be more consistent results.

Rebooting you modem will reset NAT tables and who knows what else. Older D-Link modems particularly has issues with memory corruption, but most modems use a similar Linux OS and can also benefit from a reboot about once a week or 2 weeks. (But I understand Netgear should be okay.)

My speed this morning, I'm in Pakuranga Auckland and about 2km from the exchange:

You estimate the distance based on the speed at which your modem sync with the exchange.  There are heaps of graphs on the Internet showing sync speed against (wire) distance to the exchange.  In my case I know where the exchange is, and I can guess where the cables run which correlates with the distance estimated.

Just to clarify that the Auckland server on speedtest.net hasn't changed to WxC there are now two Auckland speedtests, the WxC one and the NZDSL one.  You'll get either one when you click on the Auckland test.

Ah ok. Last week when I was trying it, I was getting WXC on a consistent basis however yesterday and today it seems to have changed.
Is it based on load balancing or just 'random' luck of the draw?

What is quite interesting is that both test sites were giving quite different results when I was checking as well (last week with mobile broadband cards though).

A week ago it did not show Auckland as my preferred test server, even though I am in Auckland.  At the time the internet was slow (for me that means below 2Mbps).  Suspect there were some issues.  All seems fine now.  Perhaps it was due to adding WxC as a test server, perhaps it is why WxC was added.
