I need to move a telecoms BDD pit, on my land, 1.5 metres from where it is at present so it is out of the way of a planned driveway. 50-pair cable into the pit, one active and two inactive residential phone lines out of it (mine, and there will never be any more). Also two fibre-optics ducts coming into pit but not connected. Trench already dug.

Here is a pic of the site:

I have to pay as it it located on private land. What would you think a reasonable quote for this work?

Odd place to have it from the pictures?

Subdivision of a previously empty area of private land means that it is now positioned where a sloping driveway access will be, coming in through the gate.

Answering that sort of question simply isn't possible with such limited information. It could easily be a figure well into the 4 digits or even 5 depending on the work required.

The only way to know if to wait for Chorus to come back to you with a price.

Why do you need to shift it? Simply so it isn't in the driveway? These pits can be in a driveway no problem. The lid height can be adjusted to make it level - might just need a lid extender if it has already been adjusted out fully. Lid extender is only around $100 mark.

Your biggest issue here will be dealing with the bureaucracy at Chorus to get an answer out of them.

I understand your point. My, admittedly inexperienced, assessment was that they would disconnect the 50-pr /phone line connection, splice an extra 2 metre piece of cable (50*pair connections), seal the join (waterproofing kit $130), same for fibre, move pit to new location, reconnect phone line, test and recommission. There is only one customer outboard of the pit - me.

The height of the drive would be about 350mm higher then the present top of the pit ... quite a long way to reach in to work on although there is some slack. But, as you say, doable.

It took chorus about 12 hours to re splice in the feeder cable for my house and the neighbours due to water ingress. That was 2 guys doing the work.

Hmm that is quite a bit higher but certainly not a big deal. The Radi should have a good 1-1.5m of slack on it. You can stack up a couple of lid extenders no problem. Just make sure they secure them with Tek screws as well as the built-in bolts.

Its usually alot less but by the time everyone adds there bit on it soo adds up

Exactly this.

This is an insanely easy job but due to the unique way Chorus do things it will take them 3 months to decide that yes, it is actually quite easy and that maybe they should actually try to be helpful because, in this case, the customer is being helpful.

dont call chorus....
just whip down to hynds and buy a 600mm manway lid and concrete it in your drive over top of the chorus one.

that way you'll have a good solid lid to drive over and chrous will have enough room to get in there if needed.

easier to ask for forgiveness than permission!
