http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/10471558/Chorus-loses-broadband-pricing-appeal

"The Court of Appeal has upheld a High Court judgment that the Commerce Commission correctly applied the law last year when it slashed the price Chorus would be able to charge for copper broadband connections from $21.46 to $10.92 a month."

Yay?

Who knows what the ripple effect will be, I do know it will consist of tighter technicians and possibly poor workmanship but its hard to speculate now.
In with the government funding in 2 years. Thanks CommComm for costing the country more money.
In terms of the pricing i though it was $34 or something not $21.46?

Have yet to come across a Chorus contractor who actually enjoys his job. The ones that turn up are foul mouthed and so jaded about their role, their employers and life in general it makes you wonder why they even turn up on a Monday

I've had excellent experiences twice with a guy in Parnell area personally. I've dealt with enough complaints and been in the industry long enough to relate to the above generalization.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

UBA was $21,  and then you buy that on top of some kind of copper (I forget the exact numbers, but something like ~$20 for UCLL, ~$24 if you want naked copper, ~$40 for PSTN Wholesale voice)

So the $34 you are thinking of is the price that Naked UBA will drop to when this goes through ($25 + $10 UBA = Naked Broadband)

My stepfather works for an alarm company where the managers are really bad employers.
He used to be a law firm manager so knows the legalities around employment law and often catch these guys out with mandatory unpaid training etc.

Anyhow the work environment would be considered hostile - he has been there 4 years and is now their 2nd longest serving technician.

I relate that to chorus techs.

There are some people who are quite happy to plod along doing everything by the book and have no problem accepting the situation.
Then there are people who let the hostile environment get to them and they hate their jobs.

My stepfather thankfully fits into the earlier category.
He left the law firm and actually enjoys working on alarm systems - and is quite happy to fill in all the mundane paperwork, and accepts things like his car being GPS monitored so he cannot stop for a coffee between jobs etc.

I think many older chorus techs fit into the earlier category too.

And remember the Commerce Commission have increased the price of copper MPF access which will increase for all urban connections with the move away from differentiated urban and rural pricing.

I think it's going to be very hilarious if the FPP eventually comes back saying the cost of delivering a UBA service is actually higher than the current $21, which could theoretically happen if the true cost of cabinetisation and providing rural services is taken into account.

I guess anything is possible, but given chorus have commercial (non-regulated price) products at ~$21 that seems unlikely. (Vdsl, and now boost hd).
So unless they are really terrible at assessing costs, that would mean they knowingly launched products below the cost of providing the products, which I'm sure the shareholders won't be too happy about.

I thought the one that came and did my VDSL install was gonna kill himself in my lounge. He was depressed about everything and wouldn't stop blabbing about it. Got to the point where I had to be quite blunt with him to get him to leave. He did a fairly good job though.
