Hi,
I have just moved to Oteha in Albany, and Spark tell me there are no ports free for DSL on the cabinet...
This is madness!!!
I have read other forums here about the same issue, and most seem to get resolved, so I am hoping someone can help.  So far no ISP can tell me how long I will have to wait for a DSL port to come free.

I have tried other options, but so far all are dead ends, including:
Chorus UFB - Scheduled for cable laying June 2016
Compass WiMax - No line of sight to tower
Vodafone and Spark Wireless data - Works but is too expensive ($50 for 3GB!!!)
Vector Fibre - Cable close by, but $1200 install fee, and then $450+ per month.
Whoosh - No coverage
etc...

I work a lot from home in a software/electronic design services.  So internet is essential for me!!

Can anyone here assist at all?

As frustrating as it is, none of the ISP's will be able to tell you when a port will be free. We can't reliably predict when someone will move out of your area to free up a port. I take it there are no plans to upgrade the equipment in your local cabinet until the scheduled UFB rollout? I haven't checked - do you know if RBI is available in your area? http://www.vodafone.co.nz/broadband/rural/

Getting to know your neighbours might be a good option.

See if they are willing to share their internet access given suitable financial compensation. :)  Free beer on a regular basis might also be an option.

I did actually.  I rang Spark two weeks before we moved.  They told me there were no issues!!  Both ADSL and VDSL were available at my location.  I can only presume that the rep did not check the wait status of my new address, as when it came to be installed I got an "opps" from the other end of the line!!

Tried both through various ISP's.
Seems the cabinet must be pretty full and with UFB due June 2016, I suspect there are no upgrades planned.

Worst comes to worst there is 2degrees 12GB/$99 which is a bit more palatable than the other mobile offerings - if you don't manage to sweet talk a neighbour.  http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/mobile-data/zone-data-packs

Unless you've been told this by a Chorus employee I wouldn't believe it.

Call back the ISP which has you as a waiter, and get them to call Chorus to ask how many people are waiting. I don't believe they are able to tell you where in the queue you are, but they can certainly tell you how many people are waiting on that cabinet and what the average wait length is, that should give you an idea how long you may be waiting for. Sometimes it's actually not that long given the musical chairs people play with housing these days.

If they tell you they can't do that, then ask to speak to someone else as I frequently got this info out of the Telecom/Chorus provisioning staff back in the days...
