Im not trolling foxton here.

Isps telling us there is only dialup in cook street foxton despite the fact there is a primary school and police station less than 1500m away...One in one direction and one at other.

Anyone from foxton out there?

What has the police station and School got to do with getting broadband? 1500m is quite a distance

Looks like the whole town gets decent broadband on the Chorus map (Broadband layer) :  http://www.chorus.co.nz/network-upgrade-map , with Cook Street getting adsl 2+ speeds >10Mbps

Thanks.
Police and schools both have internet and 1500 metres puts them both within exchange range of cook street.

What it means is that Cook St bisects the main street in Foxton so is fairly central. If you want to talk about the effect of 1500 metres try mobile coverage at the beach there.

Mobile coverage isn't related to broadband coverage. Where my sister lives she can get VDSL, yet her mobile signal is poor.

BTW all the schools in Foxton have UFB from Levin (via the FX exch) so is irrelavent from the rest of the communities BB situation.

Cook street is feed from copper x connection cabinets - having BB feed from the exchange - depending on where in Cook street, the cable distance from equipment to house would range from approx 400m to 1800m, so all should have at least adsl2

Cheers for the help.
To those querying my 1500 metres and listing police and schools....
As a gross rule of thumb...if a property is in a town near users with likely decent internet like police, schools, hospital etc it is likely there is dsl infrastructure in that town.
being close to said users means likely to be within cabinet reception distance for dsl.
having an isp tell me there is only dialup after asking for a prequal on cook street makes me doubtful when town has police station, schools etc within short range of a house. Seems I was correct to doubt.
I would change my clients isp but theyrare under contract.

This is a good misconception to clear up.

We deal with many farmers who have the idea that by living within 5kms of most schools, you will get broadband.
Its almost true.
Except the school is within 5kms of a cabinet, and you must also live within 5kms of that cabinet.

Maraetotara school is a good example in Hawkes Bay.
A copper ATM service was extended from the exchange (~8kms) to a cabinet exactly 4.9kms from the school - which puts the school within the 1mbit project probe requirements
If you go 1500m beyond the school, you will not get service.

It annoys me how people think that if they live "within 5 minutes driving distance" of town or such areas, they should get service - except you can go a long long way in 5 minutes. But technially, 5kms is a long way when 24AWG copper is involved.

Sorry thats slightly offtopic and i am rambling a bit

Tim and theclaytons both have a similar mindset - "I'm only 10 minutes out of Mosgiel" or "we're 20 minutes out of Christchurch". Yes that may be true. But when you get there, what is around you? Hundreds of houses, or another 5 minutes to your next neighbour?

I guess that's because a lot of people aren't aware of the physical distance limitations of ADSL and especially VDSL.

Not to mention that phone lines don't always travel in a direct line from the exchange/cabinet to your particular house.

What does the Chorus coverage may say? That really is the only way you're going to know.

Funny thing is that in rural areas, the phone lines often do take a much more direct path.
I know a few places around here where they follow what would be considered an old bullock track. Or you find some farmer has a PCM repeater in a weird place on their property.

Here is an example where there is a pcm repeater in a paddock and I *think* the trunk cable between the pcm cabinet and the exchange follows a much more direct line as the pcm repeater spacing is approx 1.8 - 2kms from the pcm cabinet if we go direct rather than follow the road.
