The cabinet near me (TRS/AA) is a USC TEEA. Could someone explain what usc and teea means and what capabilities the cabinet might have? Apparently it has fibre backhaul. Chorus says no intention to upgrade, ever. Presently on adsl connection varies from 1.2 - 6mbps down and 0.7 up. Thanks.

You're connected to an ASAM with limited backhaul. Whilst it does have Fibre connected this is only used to pass the ATM interfaces over and if I remember correctly they normally have 8x E1 ATM interfaces bonded giving 16mbit total (one of the Chorus guys can comment further on this).

In short. If you want faster broadband then move house or go towards a wireless provider or investigate Satellite or RBI options. This cabinet is not listed under the RBI of getting upgraded and you're in an "up-to" 5mbit area.

Is there a list anywhere that says what area each cabinet is based in, going by the letters on it? eg, the one near me says "BKL" (from memory), which I think means "Birkdale". At my last place it was "BHD" (again, from memory) which I'm pretty sure meant "Birkenhead". Is there a spreadsheet online, possibly on Chorus's page that lists them and what area they serve? Just curious.

yep they are the Exch area abbreviations - They date back from the old postal area abbreviations and others have been added since as new suburbs have been built up around larger citys and they gain there own exchange. As there are no two a like some dont line up clearly with the actual Exchange name.

Im not sure if there is a public list of them (they used to be in the phone book for each toll area)

As to which cabinet feeds what area (you can get a general idea from the Chorus network map) - but the actual detailed area files are restricted, as far as im aware, to the RSPs and chorus's Service Partners

USC TEEA refers to the type of body of the cabinet, not the internals - theses ones are the larger multibay cabinets, with doors on the front & ends,  that were installed before the whispher cabinet series were used

Thanks for the replies, that's clarified things. Not too concerned about speed as it does the job and have no intention of moving from stunning location in central otago, except in a box.

Search google for the cabinet name, the word chorus, and filetype:xls

Eg.

Cabinet XYZ JA Chorus filetype:xls
or
Cabinet XYZ JA Chorus filetype:xlsx

There are heaps of excel spreadsheets with info on that stuff.
