Im about to move into a new house on a new subdivision.  The section has fibre pre installed which on being told this i thought - great!

The fibre itself is installed by chorus.

I asked my existing ISP to set me up with a fibre modem for my new property, a new modem duly arrived.  When the technicians went out to set the modem and install up they couldn't do it.  I was told that they didn't have the correct handshake info to get onto the chorus network.

Spoke to another ISP (the one that offers global mode) and they too told me they could offer me a service, sent me a modem and all was looking good.  However, was told that their engineers too didn't have the correct handshake abilities to log onto the chorus network.

Then the frustration dug in - and i did some research.  Seems that chorus have the contract to lay new sections fibre and Ultra Fast Fibre have got the contract to install everywhere else.  When UFF install they open the service up to lots of ISP, however chorus have only opened their network up to Trust Power who are not the most competitive with their pricing and don't offer you goodies like global mode or free national calls.

The house has got fibre but it seems i have the choice of only 1 ISP and to be quite honest - I'm not a happy bunny!

Just wanted to vent really - if anyone else has experienced this or got any advice, I'd love to hear I'm not the only one....!

I don't want no sugar in it - thank you very much

Try https://www.wxc.co.nz/residential/
They did the early days of fibre to home, but things changed with the move from BoF to UFB. You need an ISP with a handover to Chorus in Tauranga. As this is a UFF area, not many do. Not sure if WxC do, but worth a try. Snap Internet may be another ISP to try.

It isn't the worst thing out - Global Mode as you call it is really just a marketing statagy and no where as powerful than going for a service like dns4me.net or unotelly where you can use more services and also more devices (like Chromecasts for example). You're still able to get UFB at 100mbit down, 50mbit up for $130 with Unlimited Bandwidth which isn't too bad at all really!

It could be worse and this is one of the main reasons why I am doing prequals on every single house I am interested in to see if it is worth going towards an open home - got UFB at 100/50 now and can't go back to ADSL or VDSL or even Cable so the next house I am buying is having UFB either now or the next 6mo.

A bit off topic but why is Chorus allowed to lie fibre in these new subdivisions? Wouldn't it make sense to have UFF lay the fibre? Was the subdivision built before UFF began delploying UFB?

Thanks for your replies.....

I did an address check with your ISP suggestion, sadly it was a no from them- I'll try snap tomorrow. I thought unotelly would be the better service actually...

Your right now it could be worse!

From what I've been told and someone may correct me, it's chorus for the new subdivisions and UFF have got the contract to do everything else- retrofit the older subdivisions etc

At least you don't live in Whanganui, As there are currently no ISPs that are connected to Chorus UFB there. Not intending to troll Whanganui. But it would mean you would move into a new subdivision and be told "you can only get UFB, Right so which ISP can I sign up to? Sorry none can offer service"

Yeah I noticed that recently here in Christchurch. Some subdivisions are still being laid with Chorus fibre even though Enable has been laying the fibre in greater Christchurch for the last three or so years, and the only providers with a handover for the Chorus fibre in Christchurch are Snap and WxC. Sucks for everyone living in one of those subdivisions. Worse still is Pegasus Town, just north of Christchurch, where the only internet is through the Vodafone cable network so residents will only ever have one provider option.

I think you will find It is more like Trust Power are the only RSP (in your area) that were willing to create a hand over from Chorus.

I know of some subdivisions, even in the Chorus LFC areas, that have no Chorus network what so ever (not even copper), as it is up to the developers theses days as to what goes in.

Nah, just tell them to stick it. Go with a wireless provider. There are a couple in Tauranga. If enough people do this eventually they will get the message.

This so called "problem" (which isn't really a problem IMHO) is only going to grow. The fact Chorus and LFCs aren't legally able to offer tail services unlike xDSL means that that an ISP has to have a handover in every POP to provide services, or use a 3rd party to carry traffic for them.

The days of every ISP being a nationwide one is well and truly over in the UFB world. End of story. This has enabled many local ISPs to offer innovative products and gain good market share in their local communities which is a good thing.

Things will probably improve in the future, but not now that's not the case. There are very likely to be areas such as Kapiti where there will probably never be any real options in the UFB market. Vodafone have something like 70% of the market (so I've been told, it may actually be a little less) with their HFC network meaning that it's really a lost cause for many ISPs to bother with handover into the region as you're all fighting for such a small market. This is why Spark is the only option at present, and seemingly may be the only option for quite some time.

Going back to the issue the OP raised - it shows a level of incompetence from the ISPs concerned if they're willing to sign you up when you're not capable of receiving service due to them not having handovers in that area.

You could try the local tuaranga isp fullflavoured -

Most new sub divisions have both networks laid (uff n chorus) as chorus was charged to install and uff was free to put in - but now i believe that uff are going to be charging to so its up to the developer which network they put in

There are only a handful of the Chorus fibre subdivisions locally and they were put in motion before Ultrafast took off in Tauranga.

The ones we've checked are still on the UFF roadmap - albeit next year.

I thought Snap was an option here, so it may pay to give them a call.

All new developments are engaged with UFF not Chorus - for example Golden Sands and The Lakes are being well-managed by UFF.
